Professor Chih-Ping Wu, Chair Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), and Distinguished Professor Wei-Chou Hsu of the Department of Electrical Engineering have been named recipients of the 2026 Outstanding Engineering Professor Award by the Chinese Institute of Engineers, recognizing their distinguished achievements in academic research, engineering applications, and industry collaboration.Established in 1991, the award recognizes engineering professors who have made outstanding contributions to engineering practice or engineering education in Taiwan. NCKU has received this honor on many occasions, highlighting the university's long-standing strength and leadership in engineering. The two professors will be formally recognized at the institute's annual meeting on June 5.
Professor Chih-Ping Wu, Chair Professor, Department of Civil Engineering
Professor Wu's research has produced important advances in theoretical and computational mechanics. He pioneered strong- and weak-form formulations for elasticity and piezoelectric mechanics based on the Reissner mixed variational principle, and developed scale-dependent consistent couple-stress and strain-gradient theories, along with perturbation approaches for nonlocal Eringen elasticity.Building on this theoretical work, Professor Wu developed innovative triangular and rectangular annular cylindrical element methods, Hermitian Cn layered elements, meshfree analysis methods, and a range of semi-analytical numerical simulation techniques. These methods have been applied to the analysis and optimal design of multifunctional smart-material structures with multiphysics coupling across macro-, micro-, and nanoscale systems. His results show that these numerical simulation methods deliver high accuracy, rapid convergence, and greater computational efficiency than commercial software. To date, Professor Wu has published 133 SCI-indexed journal articles.During his tenure at NCKU, Professor Wu has received the university's Distinguished Professor honor seven times, each for a three-year term. He received NCKU's Outstanding Teaching Award for the 2007 academic year and Distinguished Teaching Award for the 2009 academic year. He also received the Outstanding Research Award from Taiwan's National Science and Technology Council for the 2019 and 2022 academic years, and was named NCKU Chair Professor in 2023.Since 2020, Professor Wu has consistently been listed among the world's top 2% scientists in Stanford University rankings based on Scopus citation impact data, covering both annual and career-long scientific impact.
Professor Wei-Chou Hsu, Distinguished Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering
Distinguished Professor Hsu specializes in compound semiconductor epitaxy, materials, device fabrication, and characterization. In recent years, using a self-developed Mist Chemical Vapor Deposition (Mist-CVD) process, he has grown fourth-generation semiconductor Ga2O3 materials and fabricated devices whose breakdown voltage and current characteristics have reached world-leading levels.Professor Hsu is collaborating with equipment manufacturers to develop the world's first 8-inch wafer-scale Mist-CVD epitaxy production system, with future applications expected in high-power electronics. He has also developed p-NiO/GaN High-Electron-Mobility Transistor (HEMT) devices that demonstrate world-class breakdown voltage and on-resistance performance. His research has supported extensive industry-academia collaborations with TSMC, Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation, WIN Semiconductors, Largan Precision, Advanced Wireless Semiconductor Company, and the Industrial Technology Research Institute.Professor Hsu has published approximately 260 papers in leading international journals, including 70 articles in top-tier IEEE journals. He is also recognized for his commitment to teaching excellence, having received NCKU's Outstanding Teaching Award and been appointed Distinguished Professor seven times.
