The delegation of 44 participants from Thailand’s Mahidol University (MU) Executive Development Program (MU-EDP), led by Ms. Nara Pao-in, Vice President for People Management and Organization Development, visited National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) on March 21. This visit aims to facilitate an in-depth exchange between the two universities, focusing on key areas such as end-to-end research, technology transfer and commercialization strategies, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as innovative planning and design research for societal well-being. Additionally, the application of artificial intelligence in higher education and research, as well as talent management and development in future scenarios, are also topics for discussion.

NCKU Launches Center of Crystal Research: SiC Technology Breakthrough to Boost Semiconductor and Laser Competitiveness

Taiwan has achieved another breakthrough in semiconductor materials technology with the official launch of the Center of Crystal Research at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in 2025. The opening ceremony was held on the morning of February 26th at the NCKU-Delta Building in the Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP). The NCKU Center of Crystal Research is currently the only academic institution in Taiwan equipped with ultra-high temperature (above 2300°C) large-size silicon carbide (SiC) crystal growth furnaces. Moving forward, the center will collaborate with global industry partners to accelerate technology transfer and promote the application of SiC and gallium oxide (Ga₂O₃) materials in semiconductors, optics, lasers, and medical fields, strengthening Taiwan’s competitiveness in the global market.

To study and develop advanced crystalline materials, the ability to grow single crystals is essential. With funding from the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), the Crystal Growth Laboratory at the Department of Physics, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), led by distinguished Professor Chin Shan Lue, has made remarkable accomplishment after more than a decade of effort. Through growing high-quality single crystals and collaborating with over 80 research groups from both domestically and abroad, the laboratory achieved marvelous success. From December 9th to 13th, 2024, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) was part of a significant visit to the Kyushu region. The visit, which involved a group of 45 representatives from 12 Taiwanese universities (members of the University Academic Alliance in Taiwan, UAAT), was aimed at fostering international collaboration. The visit included a collaboration meeting and 2 sessions of the UAAT Fair. It was based on the Memorandum of Understanding on International Cooperation between UAAT and KOOU (Kyushu Okinawa Open University), of which the four Japanese Universities mentioned are members.
