Mapua University Visits NCKU Focusing on Academic Collaboration in Medicine and Semiconductors

On November 20, 2025, Dr. Dodjie Maestrecampo, President of Mapua University (Mapua), along with Ms. Tina Ou, Education Attaché, Ministry of Education, visited National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) to explore potential future cooperation and development between the two institutions, specifically in the fields of medicine and semiconductors.

hair Prof. Sun-Yuan Hsieh, Vice President for International Affairs, reviewed the history of exchange and cooperation between the two universities over the years, and highlighting significant achievements, including the signing of university-level and college-level Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) and numerous academic co-publications. Dr. Hsieh expressed the hope that the two parties could comprehensively deepen bilateral exchanges through mechanisms such as signing agreements and promoting student and academic exchanges, thereby fostering a broader space for collaborative development.
In his address, Mapua University President Dr. Dodjie Maestrecampo thanked NCKU for the warm reception and expressed sincere appreciation for the long-standing partnership between the two universities. Looking ahead, President Maestrecampo emphasized the desire to facilitate more faculty and student exchanges and collaborative research, while also aspiring to establish a long-term partnership with NCKU in areas such as health sciences and engineering.
Prof. Tsunglin Liu, Director of the International Relations Division at NCKU's Office of International Affairs, provided an introduction to NCKU, highlighting the university's role as an innovation hub in southern Taiwan and its long-term collaboration with national-level research institutions. He stated that the already-signed university-level and college-level MOUs between the two institutions are not only cooperation milestones but also underscore their solid collaborative foundation. Furthermore, Director Liu sincerely invited Mapúa University to join NCKU's talent cultivation alliance, hoping that outstanding Filipino talents will join NCKU's academic and research teams.
President Maestrecampo introduced Mapúa University, stating that the university's goal focuses on building the future and equipping students with the ability to adapt to global changes for successful employment. As the university celebrates its centennial this year, Mapúa hopes to actively promote cooperation in the field of semiconductors, serving as a vital bridge connecting the Philippines with the international community.

The two universities exchanged views and discussed cooperation on semiconductors and medicine.
Prof. Wei-Chou Hsu, Interim Dean of NCKU's Academy of Innovative Semiconductor and Sustainable Manufacturing (AISSM), stated that Taiwan is a leader in the global semiconductor supply chain and plays a pivotal role internationally. AISSM not only collaborates deeply with national-level research institutions but also actively expands its international exchange. To deepen the bilateral relationship, AISSM is keen to further promote cooperation between the two universities through mechanisms such as dual degree programs, student exchange, and summer schools.
Prof. Chun Hei Antonio Cheung, representing NCKU's College of Medicine, introduced the college, emphasizing its educational philosophy of cultivating compassionate, social-minded, and lifelong learning medical professionals. NCKU is the first medical college in Taiwan to adopt virtual reality for clinical training, perfectly integrating technology and medicine. Furthermore, NCKU houses a Center of Infectious Disease and Signaling Research, which conducts in-depth studies on the dengue fever epidemic and maintains frequent exchanges with academic institutions worldwide.
During the discussion session, the two parties reached the following consensus:
1. Mapua University is highly keen to collaborate with NCKU's College of Medicine and AISSM, and supports its students' participation in NCKU's planned summer school activities.
2. Mapua University is willing to further promote faculty and student exchanges, as well as collaborative research and co-publication projects, opening a new chapter for establishing a long-term and stable cooperative relationship between the two universities.

Mapua University, located in Makati City, Philippines, was founded in 1925. From 2020 to 2025, the top five areas of Mapua’s scholarly output are Computer Science (61.7%), Engineering (42%), Decision Sciences (27.5%), Mathematics (25.8%) and Energy (11.2%). Between 2020 to 2025, National Cheng Kung University collaborated with Mapua University on 19 academic publications, with the top five fields being Environmental Science (42.1%), Chemistry (36.8%), Engineering (15.8%), Earth and Planetary Sciences (15.8%) and Chemical Engineering (15.8%).
