Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta Visits NCKU to Deepen Bilateral Cooperation and Exchange

On July 8, 2025, a delegation from Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), Indonesia, led by Prof. Rizal Yaya, Director of Global Partnerships and Employability, visited National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) to explore expanded areas of collaboration. Building upon existing exchanges in management, political economy, and nursing, the two universities plan to develop programs such as faculty exchange, short-term digital marketing courses, and dual-degree projects.

In his address, Prof. Sun-Yuan Hsieh, NCKU’s Vice President for International Affairs, noted that since 2017, the two universities have engaged in academic cooperation, including signing a university-level MoU and student exchange agreement, along with memorandums of agreement (MoA) with NCKU’s College of Social Sciences and College of Management. The top three fields of study for UMY students at NCKU have been International Management, Political Economy, and Nursing. Between 2019 and 2025, co-authored research output totals 27 papers, spanning environmental science, earth science, computer science, and social science.
 
During the meeting, both Prof. Rizal Yaya and Chair Prof. Sun-Yuan Hsieh, Vice President for International Affairs, NCKU, expressed a strong desire to deepen bilateral collaboration and encourage greater student participation in exchange programs. Prof. Rizal proposed the possibility of dual-degree programs to solidify cooperation beyond the existing exchange framework.
 
Dr. Yu-Yu Chang, Director of the Institute of International Management at NCKU, added that the College of Management already offers dual-degree programs with Kansas State University in the USA and the University of Queensland in Australia, and welcomes further university-level collaborations.
 
Chair Prof. Sun-Yuan Hsieh, Vice President for International Affairs, suggested introducing a faculty exchange program to strengthen academic research and dialogue, enabling short-term teaching and visits. Prof. Rizal welcomed the idea and further proposed that professors with expertise in digital marketing could offer short-term courses at UMY.
 
Dr. Nurwanto, Dean of Faculty of Islamic Studies, emphasized the university’s desire to deepen collaboration and exchange with NCKU, highlighting UMY’s focus on industry linkages and social responsibility. He expressed hope and welcome for students from both universities to grow and gain opportunities in diverse cultural environments.

Established in 1981, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta is a modern Islamic university that provides students with up-to-date knowledge and techniques in the natural sciences, while also nurturing them through religious and cultural values. The university embodies Indonesian cultural characteristics, expecting students to focus not only on academics but also on social responsibility.
 
The UMY delegation comprised Prof. Rizal Yaya, Director of Global Partnership and Employability; Dr. Meika Kurnia Puji Rahayu DA, Dean of Faculty of Economics and Business; Dr. Hafiez Sofyani, Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, Faculty of Economics and Business; Dr. Nurwanto, Dean of Faculty of Islamic Studies; Dr. Sobar M Johari, Vice Dean of Academic and Student Affairs, Faculty of Islamic Studies; Dr. Aris Widyo Nugroho, Dean of Faculty of Engineering, and Ms. Nadira Izza Rania Putri, S.Ikom, admin staff.
