18th CHCW Cup was held May 24th to 25th, with over 1,200 students and faculty from NCKU, NCHU, CCU, and NSYSU.
The 18th annual CHCW Cup wrapped up in high spirits as more than 1,200 students and faculty from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), National Chung Hsing University, National Chung Cheng University, and National Sun Yat-sen University gathered at NCKU for the two-day sports extravaganza over May 24th and 25th. This year’s event marked the first time the tournament returned to NCKU since the pandemic, and it also featured two new events: a billiards competition and a friendly rugby match. Host team NCKU impressed with their momentum and outstanding team spirit, once again claiming the “Spirit Championship” title. At the closing ceremony on May 25 at Chung Cheng Hall, NCKU President Meng-Ru Shen personally handed over the symbolic CHCW Cup flag to next year’s host, National Chung Cheng University, officially passing the torch and bringing this year’s events to a memorable close.

At the opening ceremony, Dr. Fan-Sen Wang, President of the Taiwan Comprehensive University System (TCUS), shared three key messages with students and faculty: “Sports reflect a country’s overall strength,” “Sports open up the mind,” and “Sports make life better.” At the closing ceremony, he thanked the teams from all four universities for their hard work in organizing the event and expressed that the intense matches over the two days made him feel the athletes’ determination and effort. He also encouraged students to value the friendships built through the competition, and expressed hope for even closer cooperation among the four universities in the future. He ended by once again stressing, “Sports are truly important!”
In his speech, NCKU President Meng-Ru Shen warmly welcomed all guests and athletes from the participating universities. He emphasized that the core of higher education is sustainability, and that sustainability starts with the physical and mental well-being of faculty, staff, and students. “Health and well-being are the foundation of sustainability.” He encouraged everyone to keep a positive spirit and expressed his hope that this energy would grow from the CHCW Cup. He added that winning or losing on the field may not be the most important thing, and instead, the connections made and memories shared are what truly matter. “See you next year at Chung Cheng University!” he said.

First-ever Friendly Rugby Match draws attention as a tournament highlight.
The CHCW Cup is organized by the Taiwan Comprehensive University System. Since its launch in 2006, it has grown into its 18th edition, with the goal of strengthening collaboration and friendship among the four member universities, National Cheng Kung University, National Chung Hsing University, National Chung Cheng University, and National Sun Yat-sen University, while promoting sportsmanship and team spirit. This year’s tournament featured 19 events in total. One of the highlights was the addition of billiards as an official sport for the first time, in response to student proposals and the strong interest from billiards clubs across the four schools. Another popular new activity was the “Friendly Rugby Match,” which became a center of attention. Faculty representatives from all four universities took the rare opportunity to change into casual jerseys and experienced passing and catching the rugby ball. The field was filled with laughter and cheers, creating a warm and energetic atmosphere, making it one of the most memorable moments of the tournament.

NCKU athletes shine again, winning the Spirit Championship.

National Chung Cheng University followed in second with 43 points, while National Sun Yat-sen University and National Chung Hsing University placed third and fourth with 39 and 35 points, respectively.
