Masaryk University Visits NCKU to Explore Collaborative Research in Specialized Fields

Vice-rector Petr Suchy for Internationalization and Vice-rector Michal Bulant for Education and Quality from Masaryk University visited National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) on March 10th, 2025. The visit aimed to discuss the enhancement of academic cooperation between the two universities, and to explore new directions for joint research and talent cultivation in industry-academia collaboration. The primary focus was on the potential new collaborations under the University Academic Alliance in Taiwan (UAAT) and the University Alliance in the Czech Republic (ICU). The delegation also expressed interest in exchanging ideas with NCKU’s featured research centers, including the Intelligent Manufacturing Research Center, Core Facility Center, University Center for Bioscience and Biotechnology, Medical Device Innovation Center, and Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences.

The Masaryk University delegation consisted of six members, including Director Petr Kubicek of Geographical Institute, Associate Professor Pavel Souček of Thin Films and Nanostructures, Director Petr Táborský of the Institute of Chemistry, and Vice Dean Ctirad Hofr for Internationalization and Research of the Faculty of Science.
 
Representing NCKU were Executive Vice President Woei-Jer Chuang(莊偉哲), Director Sun-Yuan Hsieh(謝孫源)of International Affairs, Senior Researcher and Executive Director Fan-Tien Cheng(鄭芳田)of the Intelligent Manufacturing Research Center, Director Fong-Chin Su(蘇芳慶), Deputy Director Han-Sheng Chuang(莊漢聲)of the Medical Device Innovation Center, Director Wen-Tai Chiu(邱文泰)of the Core Facility Center, Director Liang-Yi Hung(洪良宜)of the University Center for Bioscience and Biotechnology, Director Cheng-Da Yang(楊政達)of the Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences, Deputy Director Ya-Tsui Hsueh(薛雅翠)of the International Relations Division, and Manager Yuan-Yuan Cheng(鄭沅沅).
 
Executive Vice President Chuang shared about the strong connections between NCKU and the enterprises, highlighting that many outstanding entrepreneurs and high-level leaders are NCKU alumni who continue collaborating with the university in various industry-academia research projects. Chuang expressed confidence that the partnership between the two universities could extend to corporate networks. He also hoped to jointly pursue the European Union’s “Horizon Europe” project and the Taiwan-Czech Joint Research Program supported by the National Science and Technology Council.

Executive Vice President Chuang presented innovative products from NCKU as gifts to the Masaryk University delegation.
 
Vice-rector Petr Suchy for Internationalization of Masaryk University introduced the university as having 10 faculties and over 33,000 students, with research areas covering life sciences, advanced materials, nanotechnology, cybersecurity, and precision technology. Suchy also noted that the university has a research base in Antarctica. He expressed the desire to deepen research collaboration and academic exchanges through faculty and staff mobility programs and to encourage more students to study at NCKU.
 
Vice President Hsieh for International Affairs recalled that the two universities signed a Memorandum of Understanding and an exchange agreement for the first time in 2017, which marked the beginning of academic exchanges. Since 2020, 11 students from NCKU have participated in university-level exchange programs at Masaryk University, while two students from Masaryk have come to NCKU on exchange. Hsieh expressed the hope that Masaryk University would encourage more students to join NCKU through exchange programs or participate in summer school courses or Mandarin courses. In the past, the two universities’ museums have closely cooperated, including hosting a Czech technology touring exhibition in Taiwan. Looking forward, both sides aim to expand research collaboration under the UAAT and ICU alliances.
 
Masaryk University is located in Brno, Czech Republic. It was established in 1919 and is the second-largest university in the country, following Charles University in Prague. The university has ten faculties covering fields such as medicine, law, science, arts, education, and information technology, offering diverse learning opportunities and striving to be a leader in high-quality higher education. The university’s top five academic output areas are medicine, social sciences, biochemistry, computer science, and agriculture and life sciences. The Czech Cybersecurity Center is a joint team composed of Masaryk University, Brno University of Technology, and the Czech Technical University.
