National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has once again demonstrated its outstanding commitment to global sustainable development. In the official nomination of the Earthshot Prize (TEP), the most prestigious environmental award established by Prince William of the United Kingdom, NCKU successfully nominated nine forward-thinking and innovative solutions. This marks a historic milestone as the highest number of nominations submitted by NCKU. Among these, five proposals originated in Taiwan, while four were international, fully demonstrating Taiwan's higher education's innovative momentum and global perspective on sustainability issues. The nominated solutions address diverse sustainability issues: 5 focus on Fixing Our Climate, three on Building a Waste-Free World, and one on Reviving Our Oceans.
NCKU is honored as the Only University in Asia Accepting Proposals for the 2025 Earthshot Prize.
NCKU's Vice President for Research and Development, Liu Chuan-pu, stated the university's dedication to discovering impactful, innovative solutions that contribute significantly to global sustainable development. Through the TEP platform, NCKU aims to foster collaboration across academia, industry, and various fields, striving to identify groundbreaking and influential solutions for the future of our planet.
TEP was founded in 2020. The prize aims to select five winners annually through a rigorous evaluation process, addressing five key global environmental challenges: "Protect and restore nature," "Clean our air," "Revive our oceans," "Build a waste-free world," and "Fix our climate." The prize focuses on identifying innovative ideas, technologies, systems, policies, and solutions.
TEP comprises 583 global nominators. Only 43 institutions are authorized to accept proposals. NCKU has proudly served as a nominating institution for five consecutive years. NCKU is also the only university in Asia, and one of only seven worldwide, authorized to accept proposals this year, serving the East and Southeast Asia regions. This honor underscores NCKU's consistent efforts in sustainability and highlights its pivotal role in addressing global sustainability challenges.
TEP has a prestigious reputation and represents a profound social responsibility. NCKU is committed to demonstrating its academic influence for sustainable development in Taiwan and across the globe. The university sincerely invites individuals and groups passionate about environmental issues—scientists, advocates, leaders, community members, NGOs, government entities, businesses, or even cities and nations. Until 2030, there is still time to propose ambitious, impactful solutions and potentially become an Earthshot Prize winner. TEP will provide winners with £1 million in funding and execution support to make a meaningful difference for humanity and the planet.
