VNU-HCM Delegation Visits NCKU to Strengthen Collaboration in Talent Cultivation

On December 5, Prof. Nguyễn Thị Thanh Mai, Vice Chancellor of Viet Nam National University Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM), led a delegation to National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) to discuss collaboration of talent cultivation through intensive courses, summer school program, and degree programs. Chair Prof. Hong-Chen Chen, Executive Vice President of NCKU, hosted the meeting with representatives of the Academy of Innovative Semiconductor and Sustainable Manufacturing (AISSM) and the Office of International Affairs (OIA).
Executive Vice President Chen highlighted the partnership through the NCKU Faculty Teaching Program this July when three NCKU professors conducted courses in Semiconductor, Statistics in Psychology and Education, and Biotechnology at the University of Science and University of Social Sciences and Humanities in the VNU-HCM system. The program was popularly participated by 162 students.

On the other hand, the two universities had a fruitful exchange in the semiconductor field this year. This summer, 6 outstanding students from VNU-HCM’s University of Technology, University of Science, and University of Information Technology participated in the summer school program of AISSM at NCKU. The 18-day intensive program covered chip design and an introduction to the semiconductor supply chain. Later, Dean Yan-Kuin Su of AISSM led a research team focusing on IC design to visit Ho Chi Minh City and met with supervisors and professors in electrical and electronics from the three member universities, urging reciprocal cooperation between Taiwan and Vietnam. Moreover, to bridge up a correspondence platform for professors to communicate with each other, hence developing cooperative degree programs through co-advising students’ independent study.
Prof. Jen-Sue Chen, Associate Dean of AISSM, NCKU said that the Semiconductor Summer School next year will also add an introductory course to the packaging and testing process other than the existing two lean courses including digital and analog in the field of chip design. We hope to cooperate with professors from the three universities and welcome outstanding students from VNU-HCM to take short-term courses here at NCKU. Currently, among the 31 international students in AISSM, three of them are from Vietnam. In addition, seven Vietnamese students have been admitted and are scheduled to enroll as freshmen at NCKU in February 2025. One of them graduated from the Information Department, University of Technology of VNU-HCM.
During the meeting, Associate Prof. Chia-Hsiang Lin, Director of International Relations Division, OIA, NCKU, pointed out that the two institutions have co-authored 65 publications in recent years. And Division of Overseas Recruitment and Admission of OIA proposed that NCKU could add one more subject to the NCKU Faculty Teaching Program and recommended that VNU-HCM lecturers pursue PhD degrees at NCKU while applying for the 2025 MOE Elite Scholarship and NCKU International Student Scholarships and simultaneously seeking joint researches. VNU-HCM also acknowledged NCKU's achievements in industry-academia collaboration and expressed interest in enhancing cooperation through knowledge sharing on semiconductor technology and experience with industry-academia cooperative projects.

After the meeting, the VNU-HCM delegation visited NARLabs Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (TSRI). They focused on exploring the organization, operation, and design of the semiconductor laboratory. And meanwhile to enhance the understanding of the industry-academia cooperation in semiconductor technology training and talent cultivation.
