The agreement was attended and signed by Dr. Chen Yuh-Neu, Vice President of NCKU and President Yamamoto Fumio of Akita University (Japan) on March 2.

An original intention for this agreement dates back to 2019, when Chairman of TECO Group Mao-Hsiung Huang introduced a delegation from Akita University to NCKU. There had been plans to sign the agreement by the end of November, 2022, but this was canceled due to some reason. Fortunately, Akita University contacted NCKU once again this year, enabling the visit and signing ceremony to take place. Dr. Chen, NCKU Executive Vice President, commented that she has vivid memories of the visit of Akita University three years ago, and she was grateful to the university for signing an academic cooperation agreement and establishing an exchange program for students. She also expressed her gratitude to Chairman of TECO Group Huang for facilitating this collaboration. During the signing  ceremony, the Executive President stated that this was a significant milestone for both parties. She also anticipated further interaction between professors and scholars from both universities in the future, which would allow them to collaborate on research and publish papers together, fulfilling NCKU's vision of becoming an international university.

Yamamoto Fumio, the President of Akita University, noted NCKU's medical and other related departments  and its world-class research and teaching reputation. Akita University valued this cooperative relationship highly. Akita University currently has four graduate schools : the Graduate School of International Resource Sciences, the Graduate School of Education, the Graduate School of Medicine, and the Graduate School of Engineering Science. A new Graduate School focusing on ICT and data science is expected to open in 2024. Yamamoto mentioned that although Akita University is not a large university, it has a significant impact on a wide range of fields. For instance, the Graduate School of International Resource Sciences has frequently been consulted by the Japanese government on policy matters. Since Akita University has also made special efforts to strengthen its ties with foreign universities, he also expressed his hope that this agreement with NCKU would lead to the expansion of cooperation with Taiwan.
