On September 29, President of National Cheng Kung University Huey-Jen Su was invited to the University of Tsukuba to participate in the annual "Tsukuba Global Science Week", with the opening speech of "The Challenges of the Epidemic to Academic Researchers: Crossover between Taiwan, Japan and Southeast Asia", sharing the experience and attitude of NCKU since the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic, adhering to the mission and original intention of unchanged higher education, cooperating rich academic resources with local cities and domestic and foreign research institutions, and exerting energy to practice sustainable and common good, and promote human welfare.

President Su of NCKU first shared that NCKU is the first university in Taiwan to issue home isolation, adopt and implement relevant regulations, and has developed an "Information Announcement Platform" for students, faculty and staff, so that everyone can track their personal health status, build a personal health passport, and view announcements, school information and related websites in real time.

"As a public health researcher, I have learned a lot from this pandemic." Citing World Bank and UN data, President Su noted that the impact of the pandemic on the international community, including the global closure of schools that has prevented almost 1.6 billion students from accessing schools, a 30% reduction in global investment in the energy transition, and 251 million people who will be forced into poverty by 2030. President Su believes that when the world environment becomes worse and worse, everyone who survives will be affected, and they cannot stay out of it as a member of higher education.

President Su said that the epidemic has brought two uncertainties: first is we have not yet been able to control what kind of mutation the virus will have, let alone predict the severity of the future; The second is that although the pandemic has led to mutual assistance and cooperation between countries at this stage, they have also seen geopolitical differences.

"We believe that 'education' allows people to have a clearer and more rational point of view, which depends on unchanging integrity, humility and foresight of their actions." President Su said that through the epidemic, she realized that nurturing the young generation with the ability to improve the world requires not only material but also spiritual support. "It's been a long road. In the face of a rapidly changing world and continuing to present problems that have never been seen before in history, it is important for students to know how to act for the good of the world."

President Su then showed the four elements of NCKU achievements in the face of the epidemic, including the use of AI technology to identify pneumonia symptoms and share the pressure of frontline medical staff. NCKU has the most complete energy technology team in Taiwan, and continues to provide sustainable energy development; the number of citations produced by the biomedical team in engineering, medicine and biotechnology ranks among the best in Taiwan. NCKU also has the ability to complete quantum science researchers and equipment to perform cutting-edge research. At the same time, when the epidemic has blocked the transportation of various countries, NCKU has also continued to cooperate with institutions around the world to produce research results, such as the network formed by the " Presidents' Forum of Southeast and South Asia and Taiwan Universities (SATU)" to promote cross-border and cross-disciplinary research collaboration among scholars in partner universities.

"The constant mission of higher education is to promote human well-being and contribute to social progress and scientific and technological progress." President Su mentioned that the mission of NCKU in 1931 was to set a common vision, and to this day, NCKU has not only connected the city and science park with its own strength, but also expanded to partner schools around the world, and NCKU became the first university in Taiwan in 2017 to include the United Nations Sustainable Development Index in its university development, and it is also honored to be ranked 33rd in the World University Impact Rankings.

"When we invest together, we never forget our original intention, which is why we become a strength that citizens and colleagues rely on. President Su said that just as the University of Tsukuba is in the core of Japan's largest science city, NCKU will also become a hub for the convergence of industry, government, academia and talent export in four to five science parks in southern Taiwan in the design of the "ShaLun Medical Service and Innovation Park" approved by the Executive Yuan, while building high-quality medical services and material supplies for the local area.

President Su further pointed out that in order to ensure the convenience of life in the future digital technology, it also ensures the diffusion of the concept of sustainability. In the past two years, NCKU has gathered the strength of industry, government and academia, and invited business people from Taiwan, the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, the European Chamber of Commerce and other countries to jointly establish the "ShaLun Smart Industry Innovation Alliance" at NCKU as a platform, holding forums, seminars, workshops and other activities to fully exchange views in various fields, promoting net-zero transformation and environmental sustainability through the completion of Taiwan's first carbon-negative emission demonstration plant, and building the first elderly hospital in Taiwan to face the social issues of aging.

President Su of NCKU said that NCKU has implemented the sustainable development goals recognized by the United Nations in all aspects, and will continue to make unremitting efforts to shape a better environment for the next generation in the future

President Su said that in order to lay out future talents, NCKU established Miin Wu School of Computing to cultivate high-level computing talents. Energy, data science, and integrated courses were established, and the Academy of Innovative Semiconductor and. Sustainable Manufacturing was established to promote the development of the future semiconductor industry. "In the future, there will be more topics and curriculum planning, and we will continue to connect with the real estate industry and international partners to work together for the sustainable development of the human community."

"NCKU people can clearly mark their values in the global community, and NCKU's intellectual culture and technological inventions will be based on ethics, pay attention to the needs of the underprivileged, apply them to the development of society, and then connect the cities, countries and future of NCKU people." At the end of the speech, President Su concluded that due to the impact and changes of the epidemic, NCKU has implemented the sustainable development goals recognized by the United Nations in all aspects and will continue to make unremitting efforts to shape a better environment for the next generation in the future.

TSUKUBA GLOBAL SCIENCE WEEK is hosted by the University of Tsukuba in Japan and is held in Tsukuba Science City, Japan’s largest science city and global science and technology center. As the pace of globalization continues unabated, countries around the world have witnessed a range of "global issues" – climate change and global warming, biodiversity, world hunger and poverty, environmental degradation, food security, human trafficking, terrorism, etc., these issues are calling for scientists around the world to collaborate in search of solutions. Tsukuba Global Science Week (TGSW) provides a platform to bring together people from all fields to share the latest research, engage in interdisciplinary dialogue, and provide impetus for action to address these thorny issues.

President Su of NCKU was invited to participate in and give a speech again after 2020. NCKU Vice President for International Affairs Prof. Hsiao-Wen Wang, Head of the Department of Nursing Prof. Nai-Ying Ko, Prof. Hsiuyun Wang of the Department of Medicine, Associate Prof. Ling-Yi Lin of the Department of Occupational Therapeutics, Associate Prof. En-Yu Huang of the Department of Architecture and Associate Prof. Yen-Ting Cho of the Institute of Creative Industry Design were also invited to participate and share their achievements in their respective fields.

By bringing together internationally renowned researchers, as well as aspiring young researchers and students in Tsukuba and beyond, Tsukuba Global Science Week covers a wide variety of topics, promotes dynamic exchanges regardless of borders and disciplines, and provides ideal international exchange opportunities for interdisciplinary, cross-organizational and cross-border collaboration.
