The third IEEE International Conference on Smart Grid Communications (SmartGridComm 2012) was hosted by National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Tainan, Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Tainan, Nov. 5-8.

Nearly 100 international researchers in power, control and communications engineering attended the conference to share the most recent advances in smart grid communications and networks with a purpose to promote green energy.

“The influence of SmartGridComm conferences has grown significantly since its first event held successfully in the U.S. in 2010,” said NCKU President Hwung Hwung-Hweng at the opening ceremony.

He said that as the hosts of IEEE SmatGridComm 2012, NCKU and the Tainan City government are honored to have an opportunity to continue the conference’s great tradition of bringing world-wide scientists, researchers and engineers together to share their innovations and ideas in Tainan.

Tainan city government offers its strong support to host this year’s IEEE SmartGridComm in Tainan where the low carbon emission and green energy have been a priority, according to Mayor Lai Ching-te.

Along with the advancement of electronic technologies and green technologies, the orange technology originating from Taiwan has been promoted by NCKU in recent years, said Hwung, adding that NCKU has an obligation to integrate the innovation of green, health and happiness creating technologies to build a more warm-hearted world for tomorrow.

Dr. Jer-Nan Juang, the IEEE SmartGridComm 2012 general chair, pointed out that the main objective of the conference is to bring all researchers together from the academia, the industry and national laboratories to explore innovation technologies and experiences in the area.

IEEE SmartGridComm 2012 in Tainan is expected to enhance Taiwan's international status in the science of smart grid communications and green technology, added Juang, who teaches at the Department of Engineering Science, NCKU.

NCKU professor Hsiao Hwa Chen of Engineering Science, NCKU, said that IEEE SmartGridComm 2012 follows the formula of two successful examples in Gaithersburg, MD, USA, and Brussels, Belgium respectively.

“Thanks to the interest of many authors, this year’s conference will continue its tradition of excellence,” Chen added.

IEEE stands for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the world's largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity.
