National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Museum, Taiwan, held a special exhibition in cooperation with the Mendel Museum of Masarykova University at Brno, Czech Republic, to commemorate the 190 anniversary of Gregor Johann Mendel’s birth and honor his contribution to human society.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition took place at NCKU Museum Oct. 17th with Hong-Sen Yan, vice president of NCKU, Ching-Hwei Chue, director of NCKU Museum, Dr. Ondřej Dostál from Mendel Museum at Masarykova University and Dr. Juraj Koudelka from the Czech Economic and Cultural Office in Taiwan.

NCKU is one of the two comprehensive research universities in Taiwan and this exhibition is one of two major milestones that the university’s museum has achieved this year, said V.P. Yan who welcomed the guests from around the world in the ceremony.

The exhibition displays Mendel’s legacy from Czech Republic and also signals the beginning for future cooperation between NCKU and universities in Czech Republic, according to Yan.

“We have started the cerebration of Mendel in February this year and look for cooperation with other university’s museums and we found great cooperation with NCKU Museum,” said Dr. Ondrej Dostal who expected that the exhibition will boost the cooperation between the two universities.

Mendel’s exhibit shows the world how important science is to our life, according to Koudelka, who said Mendel’s contribution manifests the beauty of science in human society.

“Although his fundamental discovery wasn’t understood fully during his time, Mendel’s scientific study was acknowledged and recognized as very important contribution to our knowledge,” said Koudelka who emphasized Mendel’s involvement in the life of society which is still significant today.

The exhibition, sponsored by the local government of Moravia and Brno, is designed and arranged with the help from Mendel museum, according to Director Chue of NCKU Museum, who added that a precious reproduction of Mendel's manuscript is open to the public showing the importance of his pea study in 1866.

This is the first time the manuscript is showcased in Asia, according to Dostal, and it revealed the revolutionary approach by applying mathematics and biology to describe nature in early 18 century.

He added that the manuscript is a great example to show the visitors how the big idea in science and year-long hard work from Mendel condensed to this 12-page research paper which definitely make the visit to the museum worthwhile.
