NCKU unveils the first digitized Braille sheet music software
Touch Melody, the first digitized Braille sheet music software for the blind in Taiwan has been developed by a research team headed by Su Wen-yu, professor of Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan.
Converting the sheet music to Braille assisted by Chinese interface, Chinese audio guide and music playing system makes Touch Melody the only applicable system for Chinese users who are visually impaired.
Over the last three years, the research team has continued to update and amend the software, said Prof. Su unveiled the design recently.
The software was loaned to National University of Tainan's Braille sheet music learning camp in February and August this year.
Chan Po-Cheng, a visually impaired musician who is one of the most important team members, has devoted considerable time and energy studying music and computer science making significant contributions to the project.
Chan's passion for music was the main driving force behind the software design, and in order to spice up the music learning he even added games to the software to make learning more interesting for the blind.
The software includes basic music theory and sheet music reading lessons, plus an introduction to time signatures, notes and chords.
In comparison to heavy Braille sheet music of the past, the software makes it fairly easy for visually impaired people who are familiar with computers to learn new music, according to Prof. Su.
Touch Melody features in simple and easy to use and convert to Braille and can be served as ideal learning material for the blind learners to operate independently, Su added.
The software using a keyboard and a touch device to operate includes basic music theory and sheet music reading lessons, plus an introduction to time signatures, notes and chords.
Su said more functions can be added to the software, such as save and print functions, so that music can be printed out as a Braille sheet music.
