Used bike for students to claim for free on NCKU campus
Tainan, Taiwan, 21 September 2012
Nearly 500 used bikes have been repaired and ready for students to claim for free while the new semester at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, has started and the demand for bikes has arise with the arrival of the freshmen.
The campus of NCKU is vast with a total of more than 180 hectares of land which tops many the universities in Taiwan and the best way to commute on campus is riding a bike. To get a bike is always a top priority for the new students during the first week at NCKU.
To highlight the concept of global sustainability and environmental protection, NCKU has collected the bikes that were abandoned on campus and fixed them for students to use.
NCKU Military Training Division takes charge of the service and invites new students to try out the bikes and choose one suitable for them travelling around the campus.
Restored to sound condition during the summer vacation, the second-hand bikes are collected at the field behind Kung-Fu dormitory where students had already lined up to choose the bike for themselves at the lunch break on September 18th.
“It’s really convenient to go everywhere by bike on campus, and the whole idea of recycling abandoned bikes is great. It’s environmentally sustainable, and at the same time helps student save money,” said Hsiang-Pin Yu, a freshman of Institute of Cognitive Science.
Yu also suggested students from Department of Mecahnical Engineering help repair components, saying that despite putting learning into practice, it re
Meghan Wallace, a new student of Foreign Language and Literature who has left America for Chinese language exchange at NCKU, feels happy about getting a new bike which is still in good condition, saying she is looking forward riding it around exploring the campus.
The Military Training Division further stated after the picking out, roughly twenty more repaired bikes would be easily accessible at the office of The Military Division. Parents of challenged students, accreditation groups, visitors and students for short-term courses are welcome to pick them.
