National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, is holding its traditional welcome dray driving for freshmen on Sept. 13th and 14th, offering the freshmen a lift from the Tainan train station to the dormitories while carrying their luggage and touring the campus.

To welcome and provide secure service to the new students, the New Students Service Team of NCKU has especially organized three-wheeled dray license test in which up five stages for the students to familiarize with the operation of the dray on September 12th.

The NCKU Welcome Dray Driving is a yearly event to bring a sense of pride and belonging among the youngest members of the NCKU Family, said Chii-Jeng Lin, vice president for student affairs.

He said, as the new students move in to their dormitories, the senior students at NCKU will drive the three-wheeled drays and help transport their luggage.

Six certified student drivers will take turns driving three drays accompanied by 23 helpers to lead all the freshmen to the big family.

Continuing the 40-year tradition, the event of baggage transportation and campus tour is one of the most popular orientation activities at NCKU and it has received many positive comments, according to Chia-Hao Liu, a junior of Material Science and Engineering, NCKU, who organizes the activity.

Liu said, “in the past, many new students have recalled the feeling of loss and helplessness when they first arrived at NCKU. However, the senior students from NCKU New Students Service Team have helped deliver the baggage of the new students to each campus and solve their confusions. Now we’ve become the senior students, it’s our responsibility and mission to pass on the passion and spirit of NCKU.”

“To pass the test is not easy,” said Wei-Sen Chang, the coach of the dray driving, adding that the participants needed to pass five stages, including straight line, consecutive S-line curves, downhill curve and designated parking, narrow roads and physical training to become eligible.

In the first stage, the participants had to drive straight within lines that are slightly wider than the drays for 40m. In the second stage, they had to pass three consecutive S-line curves at slow speed. In the third stage, they had to turn at a downhill curve and park at a designated point. In the fourth stage, they had to go through two pillars which were only 5cm away from the drays. Lastly, in the fifth stage, they had to drive the drays and circle around Kuang-Fu Campus, Chang added.

Located near the Tainan train station and other locations around the campus, the service stations will offer the helping hand from 8:00a.m. through 5:00 p.m. during September 13th and 14th.
