Nearly 250 international students from more than 50 countries, including Japan, Korea, Germany, England, France, the U.S and Australia take part in ”你說我猜” - a Chinese phrases guessing contest - held by Chinese Language Center of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, from August 20th - 24th displaying its efforts of Chinese language teaching and the learning outcomes of the foreign students at NCKU.

34 American students from Taiwan-United States Sister Relations Alliance (TUSA) whose 8-week intense language program is about to wrap up on August 25th are invited to participant into the contest to show their Chinese language proficiency and have fun with other international students at the center.

Though leaning Chinese for such a short period of time at NCKU, most of the students from TUSA Summer Scholarship Program are able to communicate in Mandarin (Chinese) with ease and experience the real life in Taiwan, according to Professor Rong-Fu Wu, Director of Chinese Language Center at NCKU.

Exerting not only the ability of communication in Chinese but the strength of team work, the participants have performed their best on the stage displaying what they have got in this summer at NCKU, Wu added.

Ariel Koren from University of Pennsylvania, one of the TUSA ambassadors and enthusiastic participants of the contest, expressed her love for Taiwan, saying this TUSA program at NCKU is the most rewarding learning experience ever and the people in Taiwan are so nice that she has already start planning her next trip to Taiwan.

Marian Lakey, a junior from University of Hawaii, who adores Chinese culture since she was little and finally has a chance to learn Chinese in the college, called this Chinese learning experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, saying she owes her improvement in Chinese proficiency to the help offered by her learning partners assigned by the center and she would like to come back for more advanced Chinese lessons soon.

Another TUSA ambassador, Tommy Kent from University of Virginia, who never leave his country before, is eager to share his wonderful Taiwan experience by saying that this summer with TUSA program is totally an eye-opening experience and special thanks he expressed to the home stay arranged by NCKU when travelling to the east of Taiwan for voluntary works.

Engaged in volunteer service of teaching English at National Taitung Girls’ Senior High School, National Tainan First Senior High School and Deguang Catholic High School with the TUSA members, Kent is very much impressed by the people, landscapes and especially local food, saying the hospitality of Taiwanese people is so invaluable that the friends he makes in Taiwan help him get through the cultural shock and enjoy the visit a lot.
