Ian Young, Vice-Chancellor of Australian National University (ANU), Australia, accompanied with Mr. Iain Watt, Director of the Division of International Operations and Student Recruitment, and Peters Chen, Commissioner of the Bureau of International Cultural and Educational Relations of the Ministry of Education (MOE), recently visited National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, with President Hwung-Hweng Hwung, Executive Vice President Huey-Jen Jenny Su and Vice President (VP)for International Affairs, Cheng-Hung Huang, to reveal interest in the collaborative research on hydraulic and ocean engineering and to step up exchange of students in the coming academic year.

ANU Vice-Chancellor Ian Young, who was visiting Taiwan for the first time, praised NCKU for being a distinguished university in southern Taiwan and said he looked forward to furthering cooperation with NCKU.

Both NCKU President Hwung and ANU Vice-Chancellor Ian Young are well-known experts in the field of Coastal and Ocean Engineering, having a fruitful talk during the visit.

Vice President Su welcomed the guests from Australia, saying she was impressed by the international profile of ANU and its distinctive attribute that is appreciated to the world with the efforts of global sustainability.

Currently NCKU have the best and largest diversity of international residence in NUKU campus with 70-80 nationalities, Su added.

Vice-Chancellor Ian Young introduced ANU to NCKU with some key issues, saying ANU as the only Australian university to be established by federal government is research-oriented and 3 Nobel Prices are produced by ANU.

Special arrangement was made by NCKU for introducing ANU delegation the related departments like Office of International Affairs, Department of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering and Tainan Hydraulics Laboratory.

ANU is a celebrated university of intensive research and education, according to VP Huang, and this visit to NCKU was arranged by MOE, Taiwan, seeking partnership for research and exchange among the students and faculty from both universities.

ANU was established by an Act of the Federal Parliament in 1946. Its founding mission was to undertake postgraduate research and study both generally and in relation to subjects of national importance which give ANU a distinctive relationship with the Australian Federal Government.

ANU was founded around four initial research institutes in physics, medicine, social sciences and Pacific studies and was the country's only full-time research university. Since then there have been many progressive additions to the University's range of activities, including offerings for undergraduate students since 1960.
