The first cross-strait service-learning team in Taiwan set up yesterday at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Tainan, with 12 students from NCKU and 8 students from Nankai University (NKU), China, who meet up with 15 junior high students from House of Hope, a charitable organization at Tainan, to initiate a five-day summer camp with a series of courses and charitable activities.

The joint charitable effort of students from Taiwan and China is unprecedented and this camp featured in service-learning has realized not only a new learning experience for the students form House of Hope but a creative way of service learning for students from NCKU and NKU, according to Chien-Ju Lee, associate vice president for student affairs, NCKU.

The camp provides a venue for exchange of knowledge and life experience with courses centered on learning how to interact and help teens with deviant behavior from the placement center including group activities, camp song singing, creative cooking, scientific experiments, character education, group counseling and pottery classes.

Lee encouraged the college students as role models for the juniors to share what they have learned and offer any possible help during the five-day camp.

He said that the learning at university should include service leaning emphasizing on altruism and the spirit of service.

For the students from House of Hope, joining the camp is an invaluable opportunity to learn how to cooperate with people and appreciate the importance of team work, according to Mau-Kun Chiang, director of House of Hope.

Knowing NCKU’s recent service to remote areas at Yunnan, China, NKU’s students are interested in going along with NCKU’s team next winter vocation offering their hands to the people in need.

The concept of service learning is unfamiliar to students in China, according to Yu-Ching Lee, student convener of NKU, who expected to bring home the concept and set up service-learning association sharing the happiness of "learning by doing, learning to do."
