NCKU student team won awards at short film contest
Tainan, Taiwan, 14 June 2012
N&M Studio, amateur filmmaker convened by 18 students from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, won Audience Award and Jury’s Special Mention at The 39 Hours of Tainan Project (39HTP), a short film contest hosted by the Culture Bureau of Tainan City Government, with their film titled “In Your Shot, I Wanna Say” recently.
Even though NCKU without film department and filming facilities or equipment available for shooting and the team members are not well-trained, with the passion for the art of film and dedicated fully to the competition, we beat many professional filmmakers, said Heng-wei Chiu who leads the winning team and thrilled about the good news.
It’s a great challenge to make a 5 minutes film in 39 hours within certain criteria, said Chiu adding that with great team work, everyone in N&M Studio takes their own part to perform the best and gladly the result is good.
Fanny Lin and Jack Lee, the screenwriters of the film said, the theme of the film is centered on “Tracing Origins” with which a story about a daughter tracing her memories of her deceased father is developed.
Tainan City is the first area to be brought under cultivation in Taiwan; therefore, the root-tracing journey of the daughter around Tainan symbolizes the tracing of the collective memory of Taiwan people, according to Lee.
In the film, the daughter carries a used iron box filled with photos took by her father, searching for the location of each picture and takes a new one to forge the connection with her father.
The girl’s journey starts from Tainan Train Station to Old Tainan County Magistrate Residence and through picture taking, the daughter seems to know her father better and the messages capsulated in the photos as well along the searching journey.
“In Your Shot, I Wanna Say” is engaging enough to call on universal feelings, said Lin and with the poetic touch, the film has depicted ancient atmosphere and unworldly beauty of Old Tainan City.
