Dragon Boat Festival, one of the three major traditional Chinese festivals is around the corner. Nearly 150 international students from about 50 counties of the Chinese Language Center at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, gather and enjoy the fun of making rice dumplings and sachets on June 6th.

Aside from the event today, two teams are organized to participate in 2012 Tainan Dragon Boat Race, experiencing the whole package of Dragon Boat Festival fun.

NCKU Chinese Language Center has provided the students with the ingredients, including glutinous rice, mushrooms, meat, egg yolks and bamboo leaves and helps them with making over 100 rice dumplings.

As teachers taught them how to make rice dumplings, students picked bamboo leaves, folded them to create an empty space, placed the ingredients in order, covered the gap on top with bamboo leaves and tied them up with strings.

Though students either put too much ingredients inside or folded the bamboo leaves incorrectly during the process, everyone had fun eating the rice dumplings made by themselves.

A student from Japan trying to make the rice dumplings said the taste of rice dumplings she had in Japan years ago lingers and motivates her to make one for herself and hoping to master the skills soon.

The Chinese Language Center has also prepared many bright and colorful sachets, talismans made up of various silk textiles for good luck and spice which can keep away mosquitoes, capturing the attention of many students.

When they are told that the scented sachets can be used to ward off evils, many international students look surprised and are interested in making handmade sachets to keep them safe through the year.
