The Edrington Group donates $1.7 million to NCKU for robot competition
Tainan, Taiwan, 6 April 2012
Edrington Taiwan, one of the operating companies under The Edrington Group, Scotland, has announced $1.7 million donation to Taiwan’s National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), sponsoring NCKU Advanced Intelligent Robots and Systems Laboratory.
The donation ceremony of Edrington Taiwan organized by NCKU in appreciation of Edrington Taiwan’s generous donation was held at President’s Office, NCKU on April 6th.
The donation will fund the cost of attending 2012 Robot Cup Japan Open - Robot @Home in May and 2012 FIRA RobotWorld Cup & TAROS Conference in August by the student team of NCKU Advanced Intelligent Robots and Systems Laboratory led by Tzuu-Hseng Steve Li, Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering, NCKU.
Gerund Fung, Managing Director of Edrington Taiwan, accompanied with his wife and son paid a visit to NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung and attended the donation ceremony on behalf of the company.
In the donation speech, Fung mentioned the honorable tradition of The Edrington Group, supporting a wide variety of charitable causes, largely in Scotland since the Robertson Trust was established in 1961.
The endowment given to NCKU for funding students’ participation of the international robotic contests was unprecedented in Taiwan, according to Fung.
President Hwung appreciated the generosity of The Edrington Group for its investment in Taiwan’s higher education.
Professor Li called the donation the most pleasant surprise and with which the cost for the team to participate the contests in Japan and U.K this year will be covered.
The NCKU Advanced Intelligent Robots team had travelled aboard to compete with other roboticists internationally since 2005 and received 4 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze medals at 2008 FIRA RoboWorld Cup.
