NCKU develops risk assessment of shoulder fatigue
Tainan, Taiwan 21 Feb 2012
A scale called the Shoulder Fatigue Scale-30 Items (SFS-30) risk assessment, invented by Shuo-Fang Liu, professor of industrial design, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan is proven to be effective on neck and shoulder discomfort.
Common causes of neck and shoulder discomfort can be divided into 6 core categories: occupational, cumulative, psychological, diseases, diet, and sleep quality, according to Liu.
The SFS-30 was validated by using 101 patients who had been previously diagnosed with different levels of neck and shoulder symptoms, Liu noted, “and 78.57% of the participants experienced a neck and shoulder discomfort level above the SFS-30 risk curve and required immediate medical attention.”
Since the risk assessment scale is a widely used self-diagnostic tool in preventive health care, for patients who care to be informed the severity of neck and shoulder pain, the SFS-30 is a highly-reliable and low-cost diagnostic outcome instrument.
“You can log on http://140.116.42.191/~sil/project/sfs30/En_index.php# to fill in personal information and then answer 30 questions. The report will include detecting result and rehabilitation recommend,” said Liu.
To ease the pains, prof. Liu suggest people cut down the long working hours, relax the muscles of neck and shoulder, do more exercise, maintain a balanced diet, and improve sleep quality and to keep good posture.
