Kaohsiung high school students have fun at NCKU camp to experience college life

When it comes to attending college, for most high school students in Taiwan, which department to choose is a big decision to make. Joining winter camps run by universities may be an ideal approach to help with making satisfactory decision.
16 camps run by student associations at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan are taking place during this week. The Kaohsiung NCKU Camp featuring interdisciplinary study experience, starting 1 Feb., draws the most attention.
A total of 104 lucky participants selected from 400 applicants have the chance to get a glimpse of the diversity of campus life at NCKU.
During the 5-day camp, the participants, donned with the self-designed T-shirts, not only have fun in group activities but take courses and field visits, providing them with the opportunity to see the on-the-ground reality of being a freshman at NCKU.
The field visits to departments of the NCKU are categorized into four groups: social group including Literature, Management, and Social Sciences, science group including Science, Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Planning and Design, biomedical group including Health Sciences, and Medicine, and integrated group aiming at interdisciplinary and implemental programs.
Convener Lo Chien-Hsiang, a materials student at NCKU, taking charge of the camp, welcome the participants and said, ”the camp in a fun way to help high school students understand the field of study and curricula of each department at NCKU and recognize the abundant educational resources of the school.”
Group activities ranged from a light show, bonfire and balls, role play, casino tycoon, and night competition to entertain the students and enrich the interpersonal interaction after the courses and field visits.
According to Feng Yi-Chun, a junior at Kaohsiung Municipal Girls’ Senior High School who is attracted by the heartfelt introduction from seniors and enjoys this visit of NCKU, the variety of academic resources and the fascinating campus feel in a city location are very appealing to her. “NCKU may be the ideal school for me,” she added.
“Participating in this winter camp is a great opportunity to experience the university life, get to know the colleges”, said Chou Wei-Chieh, a senior at Kaohsiung Municipal Kaohsiung Senior High School whose idea about university is still vague, “and leave beautiful memory for winter vocation as well.”
Convener Lo said, “NCKU campus, close to the train station and located at the heart of culture-rich Tainan city, offers the students convenience, historical heritage, and overall superior academic environment as well.”
“The rich studying experience at NCKU is insufficiently recognized by high school students in Taiwan who usually aspire to go to the universities located at the northern Taiwan,” Lo emphasized, “After the five-day camp, the participants will appreciate the favorable features of NCKU and then make up their mind to aim NCKU as their first choice of universities .”
