NCKU Research Expert Menno Goedhart Royally Awarded
Tainan, TAIWAN, 06 Jan. 2012
Former Dutch ambassador Menno Goedhart, a research expert at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in southern Taiwan was appointed, on behalf of her Royal Highness Beatrix, Queen of The Netherlands, to Knight in the Order of Orange Nassau (Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau) for his accomplishments in promoting the cultural exchange between the Netherlands and Taiwan.
President Hwung-Hweng Hwung of NCKU congratulated Mr. Goedhart for the conferment of the knighthood, which made him the first faculty of NCKU that has received such an honor.
Goedhart is currently a research expert in the Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS), directing a project of Dutch heritage at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU).
Fascinated by the culture and lifestyle of Taiwan, especially the indigenous people, Goedhart has set his foot in almost all over the island. He initiated the Tainan-Holland Day with the City Government of Tainan when activities are held to prompt more mutual understanding and trade opportunities.
In particular, Goedhart published a book titled The Real Taiwan and the Dutch, which introduced numerous historical remains from the Dutch colonial period.
Goedhart received the honor before Christmas, 2011. It was exceptional for three reasons. “This honor is strongly related to Taiwan which never happened before,” Goedhart pointed out.
Also, normally those honors are given on the National Day of Holland, April 30. But this time it took place at the Christmas time for Goedhart only.
Lastly, “it never happened that so many people were invited by the Mayor of the Hague City for the ceremony and reception” added Goedhart.
The Order of Orange-Nassau is a chivalry order open to those who have earned special merits for society and is comparable with the Order of the British Empire in the UK.
