NCKU-initiated Orange Technology Helps Measure Happiness

Experts at a recent Forum on Orange Technology and GNH Research tried to provide an answer to the question of how to measure happiness, as the idea of gross national happiness was gaining popularity.
Bhutan, one of a few countries in the world that are more concerned about Gross National Happiness (GNH) than about Gross Domestic Product (GDP), serves as an example of realizing a utopia full of happy people, according to the experts.
“Bhutanese believe happiness comes from love and passion and GNH is needed for both physical and mental well-being,” said Rinpoche Gap Tshering, representative from GNH Research Center of Bhutan, at the forum at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) in Tainan, southern Taiwan.
The Rinpoche said, “Happiness is a concept grounded in Buddhist doctrine and Bhutan as a Buddhist country takes the responsibility to create the necessary conditions that enable citizens to lead a good life.”
According to Rinpoche Gap Tshering, GNH can be divided into three forms and one of which -- the external GNH centered on social, cultural and technological aspects -- resonates with the principle of Orange Technology initiated by NCKU.
Orange Technology was proposed by Prof. Jhing-fa Wang of Electrical Engineering at NCKU to symbolize the technology for humanity just as green technology is for the environment.
“It refers to health, happiness, and psychological care systems for enhancing body-mind balance,” said Wang.
Orange Technology and green technology, working as a dual color for a dual effect, together are more useful for coping with the current hardship in human existence, he said.
“Recently, the United States General Assembly has adopted GNH as a development indicator to measure people’s sense of satisfaction,” Wang added.
When it comes to the measurement of happiness, Wang said that subjective measurement by using questionnaires and objective measurement by multimedia processing and bio-signal processing offer statistical data to differentiate the levels of happiness.
“Happiness Informatics, created by the Orange Technology Center of NCKU, has developed into four steps -- information input, information processing, information output, information feedback,” Wang noted.
He said the informatics has been employed to analyze the degree of happiness among people in countries such as Switzerland and Zimbabwe.
Tshering said at the forum, “It is hoped that the results of scholars working collectively to spread happiness out and create a better world will have a greater impact than if people were to work in isolation from each other.”
