Professor Pan Tso-Chien, former dean of college of engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) of Singapore, had a fruitful exchange of views with President Hwung Hwung-Hweng of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan on Nov. 29.

During the meeting, which was attended by NCKU Vice President Su Huey-Jen, Prof Pan Tso-Chien expressed interest in sharing NTU’s know-how and experience in engineering and catastrophe risk management as well as in developing further cooperative relationship with National Cheng Kung University.

Prof Pan Tso-Chien said NCKU enjoys a high esteem in engineering and praised its achievement in industrial-academic cooperation. He added, “NTU is expecting to learn from NCKU regarding the issue as NTU-NCKU ties are growing solid.”

President Huang said, “The global programs in NTU have facilitated the students in Southeast Asia to receive broader education and gain cross-cultural experience.”

“In the coming years, NCKU will consolidate its relationship with NTU as a partner university by providing exchange programs to students from both schools,” Huang added.

Knowing Huang is an expert in Ocean Engineering, Pan proposed using the recent catastrophes in Indonesia and Thailand as a case study on the assessment of earthquake ground motions and damage analysis and management.

Huang said, “The engineering achievement of Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS), a cost-efficient solution to meet Singapore’s needs for used water collection, treatment, reclamation and disposal, serves as a feasible model for the globe to solve the water shortage problem.”

According to Pan, academic institutes in Singapore are expecting to develop the ability to analyze and forecast possible natural disasters in Southeast Asia.

Aspiring to become top universities, NCKU and NTU share many ideals and look forward to entering into closer cooperation with each other in providing better higher education.
