Gift of Love -- Former NCKU President Donates Piano to University
Tainan, Taiwan, November 16th, 2011
Academician Michael Ming-Chiao Lai, former president of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), has donated a Yamaha upright piano to NCKU Orchestra on the day of the university’s 80th anniversary, which fell on Nov. 11.
Learning that Lai would contribute a piano that has been played by his wife for many years, Hwung-Hweng Hwung, president of the university, Chii-Jeng Lin, vice president for student affairs, and Ming-Jer Tang, former vice president for academic affairs, were all present to witness the special moment.
Hwung praised Lai for his fruitful knowledge and humbleness, adding that he’s a respectable scholar and researcher who enjoys and leads an exciting life.
“Even after his retirement as the university’s president, Lai continues to show his love and care for the students. The donation of his long cherished piano is an excellent example of his affection,” said Hwung.
In return, members from the NCKU Orchestra performed a musical piece of the rearranged school anthem with piano and violin. Pianist Chih-Wei Lin then presented a hand-written music book of the rearranged school anthem to Academician Lai of Academia Sinica.
