South Asian Universities' Presidents to meet next year in Taiwan
Tainan, Taiwan, November 10th, 2011
Officials from 12 universities in seven Asian countries gathered in Tainan, southern Taiwan, Nov. 10 to discuss joint strategies for boosting cooperation, deciding to hold the 2012 Presidents’ Forum in late August or early October in Taiwan.
The university officials from India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam and Taiwan exchanged views on internationalization at the 2011 Southeast and South Asia and Taiwan Universities (SATU) Presidents’ Forum Steering Committee Meeting.
Internationalization has been one of the major aims for many universities in Taiwan. National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) and these universities in Southeast and South Asia have agreed on an agenda of future cooperation.
During the annual meeting, participants discussed issues pertaining to the forum’s development and activities in the following year. Opportunities for potential cooperation in academic exchange and industry-academia collaborations were also explored.
In addition to holding the 2012 Presidents’ Forum in Taiwan, the Tainan meeting also resolved to convene the 2013 Student Committee, which is smaller in scale, in a different country.
A scheme to integrate resources and facilitate mutual research cooperation among SATU member universities was also raised in the meeting. The members have expressed great interest in transnational research projects.
“We’ll serve as a platform to connect scholars who share similar research interests and integrate resources to support the academic and research exchanges within member universities,” said Dr. Huey-Jen Su, secretary general of SATU International Secretariat and executive vice president of NCKU.
“Each project will consist of a team of researchers, while the faculty at NCKU will act as the principal investigator to the project,” added Dr. Cheng-Hung Huang, executive secretary of SATU International Secretariat and vice president for international affairs at NCKU.
Huang also reported to the meeting the recent progress of SATU Presidents’ Forum.
The forum was established in 2003 by the higher education institutions in Southeast Asia. Since then, SATU has held biennial meetings to provide a venue for leaders of prominent universities in the region.
The first forum was held in November, 2006, in Taiwan, with over 100 university leaders attending. In 2008, the issue of a university’s responsibility in the 21st century was explored. The 2010 Presidents’ Forum focused on innovation, advancement and sustainability with more than 100 delegates participating.
After he was inaugurated as president of National Cheng Kung University in February, 2011, Dr. Hwung-Hweng Hwung succeeded academician Dr. Michael Ming-Chiao Lai as chairman of SATU Presidents’ Forum.
“Through the joint endeavors made by member universities, I look forward to carrying out the missions of the forum,” said Hwung.
