A thousand orchids bloom as NCKU marks 80 years - CHINA POST
TAINAN -- Over 1,000 orchids are being exhibited at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, southern Taiwan, to celebrate the university's upcoming 80th anniversary, which falls on Nov. 11.
A variety of orchids, including the rare gold orchids, paphiopedilum orchids, cattleya orchids and phalaenopsis orchids, have been displayed since Nov. 5. These colorful blooms are used to decorate the first floor and the art gallery of the university's main library.
Sample products such as postcards, bookmarks, calendars, facial masks, hand cream and perfume are also available for trial at the exhibition.
Known as the kingdom of orchids, Taiwan has long been a hub for orchid trade. The island's orchids are widely recognized as some of the highest quality flowers in the world.
According to Hong-Hwa Chen, professor of tropical plant sciences, the annual output of Taiwan's phalaenopsis amounts to NT$1.9 billion (US$63.12 million), marking the island's dominance in the orchid market.
The orchid exhibition lasts from Nov. 5-12 at NCKU.
