A Thousand Orchids Bloom at NCKU - CNA

Tainan, Nov. 7 (CNA)Over 1,000 orchids are being exhibited at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, southern Taiwan, to celebrate the university's upcoming 80th anniversary, which falls on Nov. 11 .

A variety of orchids, including the rare gold orchids, paphiopedilum orchids, cattleya orchids and phalaenopsis orchids, have been displayed since Nov. 5. These colorful blooms are used to decorate the first floor and the art gallery of the university's main library.

Sample products such as postcards, bookmarks, calendars, facial masks, hand cream and perfume are also available for trial at the exhibition.

Known as the kingdom of orchids, Taiwan has long been a hub for orchid trade. The island's orchids are widely recognized as some of the highest quality flowers in the world.

According to Hong-Hwa Chen, professor of tropical plant sciences, the annual output of Taiwan's phalaenopsis amounts to NT$1.9 billion (US$63.12 million), marking the island's dominance in the orchid market.

"We are making every effort to make Taiwan the host of the 22nd World Orchid Conference in 2017," Wen-Huei Chen, researcher fellow of the NCKU Orchid Research Center, said.

The researcher and Hong-Hwa Chen have jointly written a book titled Orchid Biotechnology II, which was published by World Scientific Publishing, Singapore, in March 2011.

It details a series of recent progress of basic and applied research in biotechnology for Phalaenopsis and Oncidium orchids.

The orchid exhibition from Nov. 5-12 at NCKU is jointly organized by Taiwan Orchid Breeders Society, NCKU Center for Creativity, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Taiwan Orchid Growers Association, Taiwan Paphiopedilum Society, Taiwan Orchid Professionals Co. Ltd. and Dr. Cecilia Koo Botanic Conservation Center.
