Asian universities outshine local schools in half-marathon relay - CNA

Taipei, Oct. 30 (CNA) Chinese and Japanese runners captured the top three spots in the first-ever Asian Half Marathon Relay while seventh-placed National Chung Cheng University was the top finisher among Taiwanese schools at the event held in Tainan Sunday.

A total of 56 students from 14 universities in Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong and China competed in the race that had the schools' four-man teams complete a half-marathon of 21 kilometers.

Peking University was the top finisher with a time of 1 hour, 10 minutes and 31 seconds. Tsinghua University came in second one minute behind and Chiba University of Japan finished third in 1:15:17.

Tsinghua University held the lead after the first three legs of the relay, but Zhao Ran of Peking University -- who won the 5,000- and 10,000- meter titles at a Beijing university athletics meet -- outpaced Tsinghua's runner on the final to win by about 150 meters.

National Chung Cheng University was the best performer among Taiwanese schools, finishing seventh following National University of Singapore (fourth), Osaka University (fifth) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (sixth).

Finishing eighth to 13th were host National Cheng Kung University, National Chiao Tung University, National Sun Yat-Sen University, National Tsing Hua University, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, and National Central University.

National Taiwan University was disqualified because its runner in the race's second leg pulled out with an injury. (By Tsai Pei-chi and Nell Shen) enditem/ls
