They may sound just common sense, but they will help you for the rest of your life: the five simple suggestions from a senior university official given to National Cheng Kung University (NCUK) freshmen Tuesday, such as finding a career goal.

During a freshmen orientation camp on the day following the Moon Festival, NCKU Vice President for Student Affairs Chii-Jeng Lin gave five advices to 3,040 new students.

The four other fundamental requirements Lin hoped the students will meet are to maintain physical and mental health, develop a specialty, participate in activities and build interpersonal relationships.

Lin said he would make the best of the four university years and enjoy every opportunity of learning, if her were a freshman again.

NCKU currently has 22,600 students and over 5,000 faculty and staff members and offers 74 undergraduate programs and 53 doctoral programs. On September 13th, the university welcomed class 2011 with cheerleading and singing performance, video playback, keynote speeches and group activities.

On behalf of NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung, who is on a business trip to Moscow, Russia, Executive Vice President Chih-Chin Ho greeted the freshmen by quoting Yale University’s motto of light and truth.

“Intellectual curiosity and creativity are the most important things to students’ academic, physical and mental independence,” said Ho.

When a freshman asked about how to effectively manage time in university, he urged students to spend 15 minutes each reading New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and Financial Times everyday to grasp major developments around the world.

Tainan City Mayor Ching-Te Lai, an alumnus of NCKU, also called on students to read a variety of books and actively participate in club activities.

“The best part of university life is to meet a teacher, find a friend and read a book that will influence you throughout your life,” said Lai.
