Kao-Shu Hwang, Hwung-Hweng Hwung and Yu-Bo Li from Tainan Hydraulics Laboratory at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) have received the Best Paper Award in the 11th Asian Symposium o Visualization, Niigata, Japan with their paper entitled “Effects of Non-Uniform Cleanness of Water Screens on Pump Intake Flows.”

A total of 244 papers from 11 countries were published in the symposium and 3 were selected as the best paper. The 3 winning papers were published by National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center, mainland China, and Nagoya University, Japan.

According to Kao-Shu Hwang, a research fellow at NCKU Tainan Hydraulics Laboratory, pumps in the factories use motors which operate 24 hours per day and 365 days a year so they consume high amounts of electricity and energy.

Hwung-Hweng Hwung, a renowned hydraulic expert and the President of NCKU, revealed that they have helped the maintenance of pumps in factories such as Taiwan Power Company and China Steel Corporation.

“For example, Taiwan Power Company can now save 10% of energy annually,” he said.

Noteworthy to mention, the 12th Asian Society of Visualization will be held in May, 2013, at National Cheng Kung University.

“The themes of the symposium will be on civil and environmental engineering, aerodynamics and biomedicine,” said Hwung, the next chair of the symposium.
