NCKU Research and Services Headquarters Expects Project Funding of NT$900 Million

The 15-year-old Research and Services Headquarters at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, a unit responsible for industry-academia cooperation and cross-disciplinary research, is expecting a project funding amounted to NT$900 million, and Disaster Prevention Research Center alone is expecting a project funding amounted to NT$100 million, thus becoming the most profitable center among the total 71 research units under NCKU Research and Services Headquarters.
Noteworthy to mention, established during the incumbency of former President Jin Wu of National Cheng Kung University, the Research and Services Headquarters is the nation’s first research headquarter, originally planned by Senior Executive Vice-President Hwung-Hweng Hwung, who will assume the position of President in February, stressing industry-academia relations and hoping to increase revenue sources for the university.
The total project funding of National Cheng Kung University in undertaking industry-academia cooperation in the year 2010 is approximately NT$3.5 billion and the total project funding of NCKU Research and Services Headquarters is expecting to achieve NT$900 million.
Celebrating its 15th anniversary, NCKU Research and Services Headquarters, established in 1996, has grown from 5 research units in the beginning to 71 research units, gradually establishing a sound management system.
In 2007, Prof. Ruey-Jen Yang of Department of Engineering Science has assumed the position of the Director of Research and Services Headquarters, and under his leadership, the project funding has reached NT$870 million, thus setting a new record.
NCKU Research and Services Headquarters has presented Industry-Academia Cooperation Outstanding Award and Progress Award to 15 research centers in recognition of their efforts and achievements.
Director Ruey-Jen Yang expressed, “To receive the Industry-Academic Cooperation Outstanding Award, the research center must acquire an annual project funding of NT$20 million. The awards not only highlight the outstanding performance of industry-academia cooperation; simultaneously, they also encourage professors to continue strive for honors and create further revenue sources for the university.”
Senior Executive Vice-President Hwung-Hweng Hwung, the new President of National Cheng Kung University, said, “Industry-academia cooperation can increase the income of endowment fund and also promote cross-disciplinary cooperation, develop research resources and expand vision. Thus, in the future, a sound system of industry-academia cooperation platform will be established and the performance of industry-academic cooperation promotion will be incorporated into teachers’ assessment for promotion to contribute to the industrialization of research and development achievements.”
