Prior to the inauguration of Y. S. Sun Green Building Research Center, aka Magic School of Green Technology, at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, a green building which can save the highest energy in the world, on January 12th, the Siberian mammoth fossil model residing on its first floor lobby has inaugurated first on January 11th.

In his opening address, NCKU Secretary General Woei-Shyan Lee has particularly expressed his sincere gratitude toward Mayor William Ching-Te Lai for his presence as well as Chairman Shang-Hung Shen’s assistance.

Mayor William Ching-Te Lai of Tainan revealed, “I have got the information that the Magic School of Green Technology is a zero-carbon building from the newspaper 2 days ago, and I believe it will inspire the development of future Greater Tainan. As Tainan is currently redistricting, in the future, if we select a neighborhood and transform it into a green energy-saving and carbon-reduction community, it will help to achieve our goal, which is a city of sustainable development.”

On behalf of Ta Ya Electric Wire & Cable Co., Ltd., Chairman Shang-Hung Shen congratulated National Cheng Kung University on the official inauguration of the Magic School of Green Technology and expressed his honor to be part of the green building’s construction process.

Chairman Shang-Hung Shen said, “Since cables are almost invisible in buildings, the Ta Ya cables used in the Magic School of Green Technology are nicknamed ‘Greeninside,’ and the concept of the Magic School can also be ‘Greeninside,’ as sunlight, air and water are invisible but are the most valuable green elements.”

The renowned Siberian mammoth fossil model, which has been displayed in National Museum of Natural Science, Taichung, is 3m in height and 5m in length, thus becoming a permanent collection of the NCKU Magic School of Green Technology.

Prof. Hsien-Te Lin of NCKU Department of Architecture expressed, “The significance of introducing the mammoth fossil model into the Magic School of Green Technology is to provide evidence of past damage to the Earth’s environment, remind human beings of the crisis of human civilization at stake, and allow National Cheng Kung University to become the major site of earth environmental education.”

Prof. Hsien-Te Lin added, “The Magic School of Green Technology is recognized as Noah’s Ark which can save the Earth. The inside is like a big cabin, which hangs a large mural of Noah’s Ark donated by Tree Valley Foundation. The mural is three-floor high and is decorated with pairs of animals, including lions, tigers, giraffes, rhinos and osriches. Now, the Ark welcomes a rare visitor, the mammoth, hoping that it can remind human beings of the lessons and encourage them to participate in the activities of saving earth to survive through future flood.”

About 400 million years ago, mammoths appeared in Africa and they gradually spread to Europe and Asia, and about 180 million years ago, they crossed Bering Strait and migrated to North America.

An academic paper published in 2008 has pointed out that because of global warming and glaciers melting, tundra which is suitable for the survival of mammoths has significantly decreased and thus their habitat has reduced 90%, and the climate zone which is suitable for the living of mammoths has become so vulnerable that it can no longer withstand the increased human hunting pressure.

NCKU Magic School of Green Technology, located in Li-Hsing Campus, is established under the NT$100,000,000 fund donated by Delta Electronics’ Founder and Chairman Bruce C. H. Cheng to promote earth environmental education, the NT$60,000,000 fund from NCKU Research and Development Foundation, and also the most advanced green technologies, which worth approximately NT$40,000,000, donated by more than 20 enterprises.

Not only has it been widely reported by domestic media, the NCKU Magic School of Green Technology, which can save 65% of energy according to the analysis done by NCKU research team, has been globally reported by Discovery Channel, fully recording and widely reporting the construction process.

In addition, the NCKU Magic School of Green Technology has successfully acquired the certificate of diamond-class green architecture from Architecture and Building Research Institute, Ministry of the Interior, Taiwan, and the certificate of platinum-class green building from Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a green building rating system, of Green Building Council, United States.
