NCKU President Lai Selected As Distinguished Chair Professor

As National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) announced the Chair Professor list for the academic year of 2010 on January 5th, President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai, the renowned pioneer of corona virus, who has specialized in the research of molecular virology in United States for more than thirty years, is elected as Distinguished Chair Professor of National Cheng Kung University, being the first President to receive the honorary title.
In addition, Prof. Jow-Lay Huang of Department of Materials Science and Engineering and Prof. Hua-Lin Wu of Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology are elected as Chair Professors.
NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai, who has just been selected as Distinguished Chair Professor, obtained his bachelor’s degree of Medicine from National Taiwan University and doctoral degree of Molecular Biology from University of California, Berkeley, U.S., and is the former Vice-President of Academia Sinica and is currently a member of Science and Technology Advisory Group of Executive Yuan.
Been teaching in University of Southern California, U.S., for many years, Dr. Ming-Chiao Lai has published over 300 papers and received countless honors and awards, including Academician of Academia Sinica in 1992, Fellow of American Academy of Microbiology in 2002, TWAS Fellow of The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World in 2006, Outstanding Scholar Award of Foundation for the Advancement of Outstanding Scholarship in 2007, Lifetime Achievement Award of University of Southern California in 2008, Lifetime Achievement Award of Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America (SCBA) in 2009, and A-IMBN Distinguished Lecturer in 2010.
In his 30-plus years of academic career, Dr. Lai established himself as a foremost virologist on the international stage, excelling in not just one virus, but in three different disparate and medically important viruses, including coronavirus, hepatitis delta virus (HDV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV).
He has been regarded as a pioneer and a leading investigator in the coronavirus and HDV research in the world for the past twenty years, making numerous seminal contributions to the understanding of the molecular biology and pathogenesis of the coronavirus, which causes Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) among other diseases, and is an author of many textbook chapters on coronavirus.
Prof. Jow-Lay Huang has been the Research Scientist for Ceramatec Inc. Salt Lake City, U.S., the Staff Research Engineer for Ceramics Research Center, Champion Spark Plug Co. Detroit, U.S., the Dean of NCKU Office of International Affairs, and the Vice-President for NCKU Office of Research and Development, and is currently the Distinguished Professor of NCKU Department of Materials Science and the President of Taiwan Association for Coatings and Thin Films Technology.
With his research interests in ceramics and coating, Prof. Huang graduated from Department of Materials Science and Engineering in National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan, and obtained his doctoral degree in University of Utah, United States, having published over 300 papers and patents, served as guest editor of two international academic journals and delivered speeches in many World Academy of Ceramics conferences.
Prof. Hua-Lin Wu of Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, who is also selected as Chair Professor, currently the Deputy Director of NCKU University Center for Bioscience and Biotechnology and the Director of NCKU Cardiovascular Research Center, specializes in the research of proteins, enzymes and vascular biology and has accumulated various outstanding achievements and contributions, especially on Thrombolytic drugs and streptokinase.
Prof. Wu has received Excellence Award of National Science Council, Wu San-Lien Award for Distinguished Achievement in Medicine, and K. T. Li Honorary Scholar Award, and in addition to research and teaching, he has devoted himself into the study of cardiovascular biology and established Taiwan Society for Vascular Biology.
To raise the academic and faculty standards, National Cheng Kung University has passed the guidelines of National Cheng Kung University Chair Professor in 1997, which only opens to professors at NCKU and selects 5% of the Chair Professors as Distinguished Chair Professors.
According to the guidelines provided by National Cheng Kung University, the recipients of the titles of Chair Professor and Distinguished Chair Professor are scholars with respectable international academic reputation, including Academicians of Academia Sinica, foreign Academicians, recipients of Presidential Science Prize and Foundation for the Advancement of Outstanding Scholarship, as well as Outstanding Research Fellow of National Science Council.
