NCKU President Lai Presented Scholarships to Outstanding High School Students
Tainan, Taiwan, December 31st, 2010
President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, has presented school scholarship and the Scholarship of Dr. Wang Wei Nung on December 31st, 2010, in International Conference Hall, Kuang-Fu Campus, to outstanding high school students who have been admitted to the university.
A total of 62 students have received the school scholarship, NT$50,000 each, and an additional 18 students have received the Scholarship of Dr. Wang Wei Nung, NT$4,000 each.
NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao first congratulated all the awarding students and revealed his expectations for the students to maintain their outstanding performance at the university.
President Lai said, “The school scholarship has a great significance. NCKU is one of the comprehensive universities in Taiwan and a top university in the world, and its graduates are the favorite of the enterprise, thus proving that NCKU offers excellent education. However, many students do not understand or are reluctant to come to NCKU. The purpose of the establishment of the scholarship is to attract more outstanding students to come to the university.”
President Lai also mentioned, “National Cheng Kung University is not only offering professional training but also humanistic education. Students in the 21st century are required to possess both professional knowledge as well as humanistic accomplishments. Also, as the knowledge in the 21st century advances quickly and many new fields emerge, students need to cultivate self-learning ability.”
President Lai added, “Many issues we face today require cross-disciplinary knowledge to solve, thus cross-disciplinary is important as well. Comprehensive education, consisting of professional knowledge, humanistic accomplishments, international perspective and social scaring, is the educational goal. Thus, I hope students at NCKU can learn professional knowledge as well as cultivate their heart and mind, embracing the knowledge of music, art and literature.”
NCKU Vice-President for Student Affairs Bih-Ching Shu mentioned, “The mission of the education at National Cheng Kung University is to nurture talents with humanistic accomplishments, international perspective, cross-disciplinary knowledge and social caring. Non-professional learning, such as joining clubs, can enrich one’s soft power and strengthen his or her interpersonal skills.”
Vice-President Bih-Ching Shu also encouraged students to make use of the abundant resources at NCKU campus and to create fruitful achievements in the next four years.
