NCKU Student Cafeteria Offers Healthy Lunch and Lottery Event
Tainan, Taiwan, December 29th, 2010
To ensure students eat healthily and encourage them to absorb more fruits and vegetables, Health Center of Office of Student Affairs at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, offers low-carbohydrate and high-fiber meals and great prizes to attract students to have lunch at the Student Cafeteria.
Before the activity ends on December 31st, NCKU Vice-President for Student Affairs Bih-Ching Shu, Professor at the Department of Nursing, has had lunch with Director Robert Lu from Health Center and Director Shei-Wei Han from Extracurricular Activities Division on the 29th in the Student Cafeteria to personally understand the healthy diet designed by professional nutritionists for the students.
As students crowded the Cafeteria during lunch time, staffs who work at the Cafeteria immediately handed out diet logbooks to the students and helped them to record the total calories of their meals, and then the nutritionists confirmed the calories calculated, provided advice and consultation and gave them a point by stamping it on their logbooks.
An undergraduate student from the Department of Mathematics, who is having skin allergies and needing diet control, has revealed his gratitude toward the Office of Student Affairs for providing an opportunity for him to eat more healthily, “This event is very meaningful. Even though I could not come to the Cafeteria often, I hope I can come everyday starting next term to cultivate a healthy eating habit and participate in the lottery event.”
Director Robert Lu from Health Center of Office of Student Affairs, Associate Prof. of Department of Public Health College of Medicine, expressed, “As we integrate the service learning program with the activity in the Cafeteria, we hope students can on one hand learn how to calculate and control calories and one the other hand develop their service etiquette by serving others, thus further cultivate their excellent eating habit and proper eating concepts.”
Director Robert Lu explained, “In response to the government’s active encouragement of the concept of health promotion, NCKU has decided to incorporate health promotion activities into programs, thus integrating the health promotion activities sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Taiwan, with the service learning programs supported by the university.”
For instance, the Office of Student Affairs has opened 80 places for the students this term, requiring them to first complete a four-week program to understand the calculation of calories and the concepts of diet management, participate in a rehearsal to learn the service etiquette and manners, and then take turns to serve in the cafeteria four times each week, about 40 minutes each time, and finally share their experience at the end of the term.
Students who have accumulated 10 points can participate in the monthly lottery event and those who have accumulated 30 points have a chance to win the grand prize, and the prizes include bicycle, walkman, library coupons, fitness cards, and fruit boxes.
