NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai Interviewed by Zhejiang Daily
Tainan, Taiwan, December 27th, 2010
President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, was interviewed by three reporters from Zhejiang Daily, a daily newspaper in Hangzhou, mainland China, covering local news, sports, business, jobs and community events, to discuss issues related to mainland students studying in Taiwan, hoping to help parents in mainland China understand the educational conditions and studying environment in Taiwan.
“Established in 1931 and started as College of Engineering, National Cheng Kung University is a comprehensive university and one of the top universities in Taiwan, acting an important role in the national industrial development for the past decades, and its graduates have been chosen as the favorite of the enterprise for consecutive years in recognition of their excellent professional and team spirit,” said NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai during the interview.
President Lai added, “NCKU has complete courses and abundant resources. In addition to College of Engineering, for example, departments of civil engineering, hydraulics and mechanical engineering, College of Medicine also has outstanding performance in Taiwan. In general, colleges at NCKU all locate in one campus, thus cross-disciplinary cooperation is easily achieved. This is also the trend of the 21st century education, demanding each student learn cross-disciplinary knowledge. NCKU provides an excellent cross-disciplinary environment for students to absorb professional knowledge while cultivate humanistic accomplishments.”
In the aspect of the number of mainland students allowed and the tuition fees, President Lai replied that because the government policies are still in the process of discussion, the details have not yet been determined.
However, the Ministry of Education, Taiwan, has clearly stated that national universities can only recruit graduate students and private universities can only recruit undergraduate students, and the number of students allowed cannot exceed 2% of the total student number.
Based on the number of graduate students at the university, NCKU plans to recruit 70 students from mainland China, including 55 master students at the maximum and 15 doctoral students at the maximum, and expects each college to admit at least 2 master students and 1 doctoral student.
Currently, National Cheng Kung University has 70 exchange students from mainland China and approximately 25 students studying in mainland China each year, and it also has about 600 international students and about 600 overseas Chinese students, occupying roughly 5% of the entire student number, which is approximately 22,000.
President Lai also revealed that out of the 22,000 students at the university, about 37% can live in dormitories and international students are guaranteed residence.
