To elevate teaching quality and student learning efficiency and achieve academic excellence, the Center for Teaching and Learning Development (CTLD) of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, is inaugurated on December 22nd in 3rd floor, Yun-Ping Building, Kuang-Fu Campus.

“The most important function of a university is education, cultivating talents, and then research and social service. It is a university’s mission to educate youth of the next generation. Education should include two aspects, teaching and learning. However, we mainly focus on the teaching of professors, neglecting the learning of students, which is allowing students to absorb as much knowledge as they can,” said President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai of National Cheng Kung University in his opening remark.

President Lai also mentioned, “National Cheng Kung University had established Center for Faculty Development which focused solely on the cultivation of teachers. Thus, I believe the newly inaugurated Center for Teaching and Learning Development must embody both aspects of teaching, developing teaching methods, and learning, discovering questions, raising questions and finding solutions. I believe this is the essence of education and the development direction of the future education of National Cheng Kung University.”

NCKU Senior Executive Vice-President Hwung-Hweng Hwung revealed, “I am pleased to see that Vice-President for Academic Affairs Tang has established the Center for Teaching and Learning Development. As I have often said, outstanding talents cannot be cultivated without excellent education, and universities cannot transform into top universities without outstanding talents.”

Vice-President Hwung-Hweng Hwung also explained, “As graduates return to their alma mater, they do not recall how wonderful a professor’s research is and they only remember how strict the teaching of a professor is. Students’ parents also do not consider how renowned a professor is in the research field and they only care about how well their children can learn from the school. Therefore, a university, especially a top university, needs to take both teaching and learning into account.”

Vice-President Hwung-Hweng Hwung stated, “In Taiwan, teachers often teach what they like and students often learn what they want. This is incorrect. As teachers devote themselves into teaching, they must observe the learning efficiency of the students from a different perspective. I hope the Center for Teaching and Development Learning can spread the concept for the teachers to realize the importance of education.”

NCKU Vice-President for Academic Affairs Ming-Jer Tang said, “After four years of efforts, Center for Teaching and Learning Development finally inaugurated today. For the past years, under the goal set by President Lai, the Office for Academic Affairs has devoted itself to humanistic and innovative education and cross-disciplinary learning. We are excited that the Center for Teaching and Learning Development, established to truly integrate all the resources at NCKU and to promote NCKU to a top university, is finally inaugurated.”

Vice-President for Academic Affairs Tang also said, “We have visited research and teaching universities in The United States years ago, realizing that their centers for teaching and learning development have abundant resources, and we have also visited National Taiwan University and Chung Yuan Christian University, discovering that the former lacks integration and the latter lacks manpower. With the advantages of integrated resources and unified manpower as our foundation, I believe National Cheng Kung University can become an internationally top university in the future.”

The newly inaugurated NCKU Center for Teaching and Learning Development is located on the 3rd floor of Yun-Ping Building, Kuang-Fu Campus, and NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai, Senior Executive Vice-President Hwung-Hweng Hwung, Vice-President for Academic Affairs Ming-Jer Tang, Director of Center for Teaching and Learning Development J. J. Wang, Director of Center for General Education Wei-Yung Wang, Secretary General Woei-Shyan Lee, other directors, deans and dozens of personnel have attended the inauguration ceremony.

The NCKU Center for Faculty Development, established in 2006, aims to strengthen the professional teaching ability of teachers and teaching assistants; however, to achieve academic excellence and innovation and elevate teaching quality and student learning efficiency, the Center for Teaching and Learning Development (CTLD) is established.
