NCKU Organized Advisory Board Meeting to Sketch Blueprint of Top Universities
Tainan, Taiwan, December 10th, 2010
To gather ideas to develop into one of the top universities, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, has organized Advisory Board Meeting on December 10th in Conference Room I, 4F Yun-Ping Building, Kuang-Fu Campus, inviting six Members of Advisory Board to come to NCKU and make suggestions to the NCKU project of developing into a world-class university.
NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai has personally invited top scholars, including Academician Paul Ching-Wu Chu of Academia Sinica, Academician Fan-Sen Wang of Academia Sinica, Director Maw-Kuen Wu of Institute of Physics, Academia Sinica, Academician Cheng-Wen Wu of Academia Sinica, Prof. Shie-Ming Peng of Chemistry Department, National Taiwan University, and Chair Prof. Chao-Cheng Mai of National Chiao Tung University, in Taiwan, to act as Members of Advisory Board.
“Currently, the academic research capacity of NCKU has reached the phase of stable development and major breakthrough, where foreign visitors, returning alumni and teachers and students can all recognize the upgraded facilities, the increased research fund, and the growing international exposure,” said President Lai in his briefing on NCKU Project of Promoting Academic Excellence and Developing World Class Research Centers.
President Lai pointed out, “In the past five years, NCKU has reduced the number of courses offered, encouraged students to take cross-departmental courses, improved general education curriculum, enhanced administrative efficiency of the general affairs, strengthened the educational facilities and campus security system, attracted leaders in given disciplines, encouraged patent applications from university faculty and start-up companies from faculty, emphasized creativity and innovative training, promoted university’s intellectual properties, increased international enrolment, and developed all-English courses and programs.”
President Lai further explained, “The period from 1931 to 1950 is the Period of Regional College of Engineering, the period from 1950 to 1980 is the Period of Growth with Purdue-NCKU collaboration, the period from 1980 to 2009 is the Period of Expansion – A Comprehensive University with the establishment of Colleges of Medicine and Social Science, and starting in 2010 is the Period of Social Relevance, where humanity and social science are the most important tasks of NCKU in the future.”
In the Advisory Board Meeting, Academician Cheng-Wen Wu of Academia Sinica has exchanged opinions with NCKU Heads on the topic of world ranking, and he believed that university ranking is only a reference and as a comprehensive university, NCKU can only make key developments with limited resources.
In addition, Director Maw-Kuen Wu of Institute of Physics, Academia Sinica, has given high acknowledgement of the recent transformation of NCKU, and he believed that its cross-disciplinary cooperative research has escaped the traditional sole-disciplinary research, thus creating higher-quality research achievements with breakthrough.
NCKU Vice-President for Academic Affairs Ming-Jer Tang, Vice-President for International Affairs Huey-Jen Su, Vice-President for General Affairs Jing-Wen Chen, Vice-President for Research and Development Chi-Chuan Huang have also made briefings on academic achievements, international achievements, software and hardware construction achievements, and research and industry-academia achievements.
