Painting their lives with brushes and lens, Mr. Kuo-Chuan Kuo and Mr. Meng-Hsiung Hsieh, two renowned figures from the field of medicine who dedicate themselves to saving life, are invited to display their works at Art Center of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, from December 9th, 2010, to January, 16th, 2011, bringing beauty and aesthetics into people’s everyday life and making it full of pleasure and surprise.

In recognition of the integration of art and aesthetics into life and the demonstration of an elegant living attitude, NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai, who specializes in medicine and advocates humanities and art, has spared time to attend the Exhibition, personally acknowledging the wonderful achievements of Mr. Kuo-Chuan Kuo and Mr. Meng-Hsiung Hsieh.

NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai addressed in his opening remark, “I believe the Exhibition is of high significance, illustrating the integration of professionalism and art, the goal that National Cheng Kung University has put in great efforts into. Everybody knows that art can cultivate one’s mind, and National Cheng Kung University has devoted itself to educate students with professional skills and human accomplishments.”

President Lai also mentioned, “NCKU Student Activity Center is newly renovated for students to enjoy a wonderful artistic environment and a wonderful activity space and to cultivate humanistic accomplishments, including music and art. We hope every student at NCKU can become artists or musicians, integrating professionalism and art together, and Mr. Kuo-Chuan Kuo and Mr. Meng-Hsiung Hsieh are two excellent models.”

Mr. Kuo-Chuan Kuo revealed, “I have been a doctor for 58 years, and put all my time and energy on the patients. In 2001, I retired at the age 74 and started planning my second life, hoping to make excellent use of the rest of my life. After my friend had encouraged me to start painting, since it is no limited by age, I have started painting. Because I had no drawing background, I asked two teachers to teach me the basic sketching and coloring, but they told me it was best that I just draw whatever I want in whatever way. Then they took me to places in Japan, Europe and Taiwan to fulfill my wish of painting. In 10 years, I have completed nearly 200 paintings. It was hard work, but I do have a strong sense of accomplishment.”

Mr. Meng-Hsiung Hsieh said, “Dr. Kuo-Chuan Kuo has already talked about his mental journey. His medical skills have taught me so much and his artistic talent has inspired me as well. Taiwan’s professional education has reached a certain standard, but we still lack humanistic education. Technologies and medicine are not enough; we must also have humanities and art.”

Mr. Meng-Hsiung Hsieh further explained, “For example, the most important part of a vehicle is its engine, but the wheel is also a vital part. The wheel is like humanities, giving us a direction or goal of our live. A car cannot go anywhere without a wheel, a direction. President Lai, a medical expert, is also a musician who enjoys playing violin. Thus, technologies and humanities are always communicating to each other. They are not antagonistic, but are complementary.”

Mr. Kuo-Chuan Kuo, the CEO of Kuo General Hospital, Tainan, has recent works been consecutively selected for the French Salon, and along with his son, Mr. Tzung-Cheng Kuo, currently the Superintendent of the Hospital, who has loved drawing since his childhood, they have been recruited as consultants of Tainan Fine Arts Association, showing superb artistic skills as amateur medical painters.

Believing that humans’ lives are more important that the of the Earth and dedicating most of his life to patients, Mr. Kuo-Chuan Kuo, who is 83-year-old, began painting at the age of 74 and has been painting for more than 9 years, and his works in recent years have captured the attention of French artists and been displayed inside Grand Palais, France, annually.

Even though Mr. Kuo-Chuan Kuo has never learned composition, perspective or sketch, and has considered studying under renowned painters during his early painting days, he has decided to explore painting on his own because his friends have encouraged him to escape the restraints of tradition and paint freely according to his will to creative his own style.
