NCKU Intelligent Robot Team Won First Prize in National Robot Competition
Tainan, Taiwan, December 1st, 2010
A research team led by Distinguished Prof. Tzuu-Hseng S. Li of Department of Electrical Engineering at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has won the first prize and NT$400,000 in the 2010 National Robot Competition, hosted by HIWIN Technologies Corporation and Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs, with the invention of sophisticated intelligent robot arms.
Distinguished Prof. Tzuu-Hseng S. Li pointed out, “In the future, robots will become an indispensable part of household life. Sting is a multi-functional robot which has strong machinery arms. The axle of the arms, driven by two motors, allows the machinery arms to have better strength and flexibility.”
“Since the purpose of the intelligent robots, with functions of cleaning the household and serving tea, is to help the lives of human beings, the research and development of the robot Sting particularly emphasizes on flexibility, trying to make its machinery arms perform the functions of human arms,” said student Chen-Yu Yu of NCKU Department of Electrical Engineering.
The intelligent robot named Sting, with its arms made up of 10 DC servo motors, is approximately 140cm in height, 60cm in arm length and 35kg in weight, and can bear a maximum weight of approximately 2kg.
The 2010 National Robot Competition, hosted by HIWIN Technologies Corporation and Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs, includes categories of dancing, lifting, brushing and categorizing, emphasizing the flexibility, stability and lifting ability of the robot arms.
In the category of dancing, the participating teams had to choose a 3-minute piece of music, finish the routines, complete approximately 2-minute self-composed creative movements, and lastly accomplish the assigned movement of pulling cloth in accordance with the music. The NCKU robot Sting had successfully completed the assigned movements and also showed high degree of flexibility.
In the category of lifting, the robot arms had to pick up 9 identical milk bottles with different weights and transport them to the drop zone in 5 minutes and they could also try to pick up the rack to win extra points. Even though it had failed at picking up the racket, the NCKU robot Sting had successfully completed the mission of transporting the milk bottles.
In the category of brushing, within 7 minutes, the robot arms had to use different colors of markers, black, blue, red and green, to finish a graffiti painting of car on specified paper, use the black marker to write the phrase HIWIN on the left corner of the paper, and finish the movement of stamping. The NCKU robot Sting had dropped the red marker when it drew the graffiti but it had finished the task in allowed time.
In the category of categorizing, the most difficult task of all, the robot arms had to complete a categorizing mission of colored balls, including 5 balls for each of the 4 colors, and triangles, including 1 triangle for each of the 4 colors, placing them into holes of the same color and shape in the shortest time. The NCKU robot Sting had scored the highest points when it performed high degree of sensitivity and accuracy.
The members of NCKU research team include Distinguished Prof. Tzuu-Hseng S. Li of Department of Electrical Engineering and six master and doctoral students.
The 2010 National Robot Competition, hosted by HIWIN Technologies Corporation and Industrial Development Bureau, Ministry of Economic Affairs, organized by Robotics Association Taiwan and co-organized by Precision Machinery Research Development Center, integrates the three major themes of intelligent robots, intelligent machinery arms and security robots, aiming to stimulate creativities, promote industry-academia cooperation, cultivate outstanding talents and encourage the development of Taiwan’s robot industry.
