President Chin-Cheng Lee of National Quemoy University (NQU), former Secretary General of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), has delivered a speech in Conference Room, Yun-Ping Building, NCKU, Tainan, Taiwan, discussing the formation of cross-strait triangular academic alliance on the existing cooperative foundations of National Quemoy University, Xiamen University and National Cheng Kung University and hoping to initiate a new mode of cross-strait higher education cooperation to cultivate cross-strait talents.

The Ministry of Education, Taiwan, has promoted double joint degree for Southeast Asian students to complete their undergraduate studies in universities in Taiwan, and now National Quemoy University has promoted triple joint degree as a new educational system.

President Chin-Cheng Lee of National Quemoy University explained, “The triple joint degree system adopts the operation mode of 6+1+1, allowing students from National Quemoy University, Xiamen University and National Cheng Kung University to attend each university to complete their studies and obtain bachelor degree. In other words, the students will finish courses for six terms (three academic years) in their own universities and finish courses for one term in each of the other two universities.”

For instance, students from Xiamen University will complete their courses at Xiamen University for six terms (three academic years) and complete courses at National Quemoy University for one term and also courses at National Cheng Kung University for one term, and eventually complete courses for eight terms and obtain bachelor degree.

Similarly, students from National Quemoy University can complete their courses at National Quemoy University for six terms and complete courses for two terms respectively at Xiamen University and National Cheng Kung University.

President Chin-Cheng Lee expressed, “Four years ago, Koxinga Cheng-Gong Zheng chose Kinmen as the base to recover Taiwan. He landed at Tainan, making National Cheng Kung University the only university in the world named after Koxinga. Following the route of Koxinga, National Quemoy University and National Cheng Kung University are connected as one line, thus becoming the road of cross-strait success.”

President Lee expected to open a road for National Quemoy University, Xiamen University and National Cheng Kung University through academic exchange and cooperation between the three universities and National Quemoy University to act as the exchange platform because of its unique geographical location.

President Lee also mentioned, “The future development objective of National Quemoy University is to recruit outstanding students from mainland China. Through the cultivation of Taiwanese education, economy and culture, as well as the free school spirit and rich creative forces, cross-strait talents will be nurtured.”

In memory of Koxinga Cheng-Gong Zheng, NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai has explored the historical origin of the route of Koxinga, established intimate cooperative relationship with National Quemoy University, eagerly promoted the research of Southern Fujian Culture, and integrated the mutual efforts of Xiamen University and National Quemoy University to establish cross-strait academic alliance, together planning the development of future higher education and the construction of Kinmen-Xiamen living circle.
