Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research Education Delegation and Pro-Provost for Europe Prof. Michael Wilson of University College London (UCL) have visited President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, on November 18th, understanding the developing conditions of NCKU and higher education in Taiwan and hoping to establish future cooperative relationship.

In the meeting with Pro-Provost for Europe Prof. Michael Wilson of University College London, NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai first introduced the characteristics of teaching and research at NCKU briefly.

He said, “National Cheng Kung University is established initially as College of Engineering in 1931 and it gradually became a comprehensive university. One of the characteristics of NCKU is that it has integrated campus, thus all the disciplines are located in one campus and it is very easy to promote inter-disciplinary research and cooperation.”

Pro-Provost for Europe Prof. Michael Wilson of UCL expressed, “I believe it is the job of a university to be global, as far as possible, and to contribute to mankind’s wellbeing. The application of knowledge to solve mankind’s problem is important. Thus, what we have done at UCL is that we have defined four categories of grand challenges, which are global health, sustainable cities, intercultural interactions and human wellbeing. The idea is that everyone who is doing research at UCL should be involved in one of these four categories in someway.”

Prof. Michael Wilson further explained, “There has to be multi-disciplinary approach to solve world’s problems. For example, in global health, we need political, economic and sociological involvement. To encourage multi-disciplinary approach to solve world’s problems, we organize joint-seminars, work groups and think tanks, in which representatives from different faculties gather together to address on a particular issue.”

Prof. Michael Wilson believed that University College London has a mission for global health, rather then just European health, and the institution has to get involved in other countries, not only in diseases happening in United Kingdom.

In addition to Prof. Michael Wilson from University College London, Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research Education Delegation, consisting of University of Vienna, University of Salzburg, Medical University Innsbruck and Medical University of Graz and other renowned universities, has also arrived at National Cheng Kung University, meeting President Lai and visiting the Museum and the TOUCH Center.

University College London (UCL), founded in 1826, is a public research university located in London, United Kingdom, and the largest constituent college of the federal University of London. According to the 2010 QS World University Rankings, UCL is ranked 4th overall in the world and 2nd in Europe.
