NCKU Celebrates Its 79th Anniversary
Tainan, Taiwan, November 11th, 2010
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has celebrated its 79th Anniversary on November 11th in the Kuang-Fu Sports Field, Kuang-Fu Campus, National Cheng Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan, where 360 participants, including senior alumni who have graduated for 40 years, 50 years and 60 years and alumni representatives from different countries, have attended the celebration ceremony with the teachers and students.
In addition to the celebration ceremony, parade, awarding ceremony of outstanding alumni, donating ceremony of Semiconductor Memorial Hall from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, donating ceremony of China Steel Metal Laboratory from China Steel Corporation, opening ceremony of Exhibition of National Cheng Kung University History and various art events organized by NCKU Art Center have also taken place in the campus.
NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai pointed out in the opening remark of the celebration ceremony, “Today is a special day as we gather here to celebrate the 79th Anniversary of National Cheng Kung University together. Next year is the 80th Anniversary of NCKU. Soon, NCKU will march into a new era. Many alumni from different countries, such as Malaysia and United States, have returned to their alma mater to celebrate the 79th birthday of NCKU.”
President Lai also mentioned, “National Cheng Kung University has made rapid improvements in the past few years. Currently, NCKU is one of the top universities in the world. In world university rankings, it is only second to National Taiwan University and some of its fields have already succeeded that of NTU. For instance, the College of Engineering at NCKU is one of the best in the world and also the best in Taiwan. Because of the efforts of the faculty and students and the support of alumni, NCKU has made such significant improvement.”
President Lai further revealed, “Today is the last time that I host the celebration ceremony as the President of NCKU. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to say a few words to the students. During their four years of study at NCKU, I hope each student can value both professional knowledge and human accomplishments. Human accomplishments include cross-disciplinary knowledge, international perspectives, communication skills, and caring for the society, earth and human beings. I also urge our alumni to work together with the teachers and students at NCKU, so National Cheng Kung University can become a world top university.”
The flame which signaled the start of the series of events is passed from the hands of an alumnus who has graduated for 60 years to an alumnus who has graduated for 50 years and to an alumnus who has graduated for 40 years and then to an alumnus who has graduated for 30 years.
The flame is finally passed to students who are still attending the university, symbolizing the spirit of NCKU, inheritance, which is passing the knowledge and experience of a generation to the younger generation.
Established in 1931, National Cheng Kung University has fostered nearly 150,000 alumni spread over the world and they are favored by the enterprises for their persistence, team spirit and professional abilities.
On behalf of all the NCKU alumni, President Chin-Cheng Lee of National Quemoy University said, “The spirit of NCKU has entered Mainland China from Taiwan Strait. NQU has continued the spirit of NCKU and carried it forward. Back then, Koxinga Cheng-Gong Zheng landed at Tainan as it crossed Taiwan Strait from Kinmen and Xiamen. Now, National Cheng Kung University, which is named after Koxinga, fellows the route of Cheng-Gong Zheng and enters Kinmen and Xiamen.”
Among the celebration events of the 79th Anniversary of National Cheng Kung University, a series of art and intellectual feasts, including performance by Ming Hwa Yuan Arts and Cultural Group, lecture by director Shu-Yu Lin of the film Winds of September, Special Exhibition of Literary Master Chih-Fan Chen and Exhibition of National Cheng Kung University History, are carried out throughout the campus.
