The robots developed by a research team led by Distinguished Prof. Tzuu-Hseng Li of Department of Electrical Engineering at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, have competed with 52 teams from 10 countries and won three first prizes and two third prizes, thus becoming the biggest winner of 2010 FIRA Robot World Cup held in Bangalore, India.

The aiRobots-V, a fully autonomous humanoid robot developed by NCKU Advanced Intelligence Robot and System Lab, has taken first prizes in basketball, obstacle run and overall accumulated points and third prize in lift and carry in the competition of HuroCup, and also third prize in 3 on 3 soccer in the competition of Androsot.

NCKU Distinguished Prof. Tzuu-Hseng Li pointed out, “To achieve the basic concepts of humanoid robot, the design and implementation have to be made to be as similar as possible with the movements and degree of freedom of human beings. The use of sensors is based on the senses of human beings. In terms of the robot itself, we have adopted aluminum alloy materials which are light in weight and high in hardness, allowing the movements of the robots to be more quick and swift.”

Prof. Tzuu-Hseng Li further explained, “To quickly train robots to do various movements, we have written a man-machine interface which can control the motors to do different movements. In addition, to prevent robots from falling, we have installed triaxial accelerometer on the robots to determine whether we need to adjust the servo motors which control the tilt of the body. Lastly, we have also designed a power driver circuit board which provides enough power for the normal operation of components.”

Doctoral student Yu-Te Su of Department of Electrical Engineering added, “The HuroCup competition of the 2010 FIRA Robot World Cup has 8 categories, including basketball, obstacle run, lift and carry, penalty kick, weightlifting, climbing wall, marathon and sprint. The competition adopts the point system and each category, except marathon which only has one round, has two rounds in the three-day race. The team with the highest accumulated points claims the first prize of that particular category.”

In the category of basketball, the robots have to pick up the ball, throw it into the basket at a distance of 40cm to 60cm away from the basket in a limited time. The NCKU humanoid robot aiRobots-V can accurately determine the location of the ball and the basket, grab the ball and throw it into the basket, thus successfully completed five three-pointers in a row.

In the category of obstacle run, the robots need to detect and avoid obstacles from the starting line to the finishing line, passing a distance of 3m, and find a route to pass the obstacles in 5 minutes. The NCKU aiRobots-V has successfully passed the obstacles twice and reached the finishing line in limited time.

In the category of lift and carry, the robots have to walk on uneven ground which has 5mm to 1cm laminated surface within 5 minutes for a distance of 300cm. The NCKU aiRobots-V has successfully completed the walking distance two times out of the five times it tried, thus only claiming third prize in this category.
