Partnership between NCKU and WHU Initiated

Tainan, Taiwan, November 8th, 2010

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, and Wuhan University (WHU), Mainland China, have jointly signed Academic Cooperation and Exchange Agreement and Student Exchange Program Memorandum on November 8th in Office of the President, Yun-Ping Building, Kuang-Fu Campus, National Cheng Kung University, hoping to promote literature exchange, scientific research and cooperation of other fields.

Prior to visit NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai, the delegation of Wuhan University has visited “Professor Su Xuelin’s Study” at NCKU Museum and participated in a discussion with deans of NCKU colleges.

NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai believed, “Both universities have complementary efforts on the compiling research of the cultural and historic relics of Prof. Xue-Lin Su. By signing the Academic Cooperation and Exchange Agreement and Student Exchange Program Memorandum, the opportunities for academic research between the two universities are greater. In the future, professors from both parties can seek possible research topics and jointly develop related research to reach the goal of comprehensive cooperation.”

Director Yi-Yuan Chen of NCKU Department of Chinese Literature pointed out, “Writer Xue-Lin Su of the new literature has assumed the position of President at Wuhan University for 18 years before the war of resistance. After she came to Taiwan in 1952, Prof. Su has taught at National Cheng Kung University until she passed away. With Prof. Su as a bridge between the two universities, the large-scale research and compilation of the works, artifacts and collections of Prof. Su are an excellent basis for cooperation.”

To promote the academic exchange and cooperation on teaching and scientific fields, National Cheng Kung University and Wuhan University have agreed to engage in faculty visits and student exchange, organize academic and teaching seminars, participate in scientific research cooperation on areas of mutual interests, supervise graduate students, as well as share academic information, teaching materials and publications.

In terms of student exchange program, both parties have agreed to each send 5 students to the other university for a semester and the students can select courses similar to their areas of learning at their home university.

The Wuhan University delegation includes President Hai-Liang Gu, Dean Shi-Ju Zhao of College of Chinese Language and Literature, Vice Dean Yong-Hai Wang of Economics and Management School, Director Xiao-Lin Chang of Office for Development Planning and Construction, Party Secretary Zhen-Fa Hou of School of Law, and Deputy Director Li-Ming He of Office for Hong Kong Macao & Taiwan Affairs.

Wuhan University is a key university located in Wuchang, Jubei, China. Regarded as one of the top 10 universities in China, it is directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. Its history dates back to 1893, making it one of the China's oldest higher learning institutions.
