Six young teachers at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, have won 2010 Ta-You Yu Memorial Award of National Science Council, Executive Yuan, and received certificates from NCKU President Michael Ming-Chiao Lai on October 27th in a staff meeting.

Among the 40 recipients of the Ta-You Yu Memorial Award, the NCKU recipients are Associate Prof. Ju-Ming Wang of Institute of Bioinformatics and Biosignal Transduction, Associate Prof. Jeen-Shing Wang of Department of Electrical Engineering, Assistant Prof. Kai-Wei Chiang of Department of Geomatics, Assistant Prof. Charles Lin of Department of Earth Sciences, Associate Prof. Ching-Lung Lin of Department of Mathematics and Assistant Prof. Ping-Yenn Liu of Department of Internal Medicine.

Each recipient will receive an annual research fund of NT$500,000 from National Science Council for the next three years.

The main research interests of Associate Prof. Ju-Ming Wang of Institute of Bioinformatics and Biosignal Transduction are molecular inflammation, molecular cancer, signal transduction, gene regulation and transcriptome, hoping to solve and study the basic and applied medical researches to help benefit the public health.

Associate Prof. Jeen-Shing Wang of Department of Electrical Engineering specializes in the areas of design of learning chip, intelligent control, computational intelligence, optimization theory and data mining, making innovative breakthrough in scientific theories and engaging in specific implementations to illustrate the practical value of the theories.

Assistant Prof. Kai-Wei Chiang of Department of Geomatics, who specializes in inertial navigation and surveying system, multi-frequency global navigation satellite system and multi-sensor integrated positioning and navigation system, has expressed his gratitude toward NCKU for providing wonderful research environment, excellent equipments and facilities and positive working atmosphere, allowing him to explore research topics of his interests freely.

Assistant Prof. Charles Lin of Department of Earth Sciences, who has received 2008 Academia Sinica Research Award for Junior Research Investigators, mainly focuses on the research of Earth’s upper atmosphere and space environment and he has revealed his appreciation for the guidance of two supervising teachers, Prof. Jann-Yenq Liu of Institute of Space Science at National Central University and Dr. Arthur D. Richmond of High Altitude Observatory, National Center for Atmospheric Research, U.S., in inspiring him.

Associate Prof. Ching-Lung Lin of Department of Mathematics, who has won Young Mathematician Award of the Mathematical Society and NCTS Young Theorist Award, truly appreciates the guidance he has received from many teachers so he can continue to study and solve scientific questions and create better research achievements.

Assistant Prof. Ping-Yenn Liu of Department of Internal Medicine, who has received Ting Nong Award from Taiwan Society of Cardiology, has focused on the role of RHO kinase (ROCK) in cardiovascular and metabolic disease, showing that leukocyte ROCK activity is elevated in Taiwanese subjects with metabolic syndrome in Journal of American College of Cardiology, 2007, and is the first to show that statins could improve endothelial function through inhibition of ROCK activity and not LDL lowering in Circulation, 2008.
