The “See the Way of Sound” documentary, organized by Office for Disability Service of Student Counseling Division, Office of Student Affairs, and Department of Taiwanese Literature at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, is held at 7pm, October 26th, in the Lecture Room of NCKU College of Medicine.

The “See the Way of Sound” documentary, which took one year to film, reveals the true image and campus life of student Wei-Chi Huang of Department of Industrial Design, allowing many students to witness and understand the problems that hearing impaired students face at school.

The documentary is produced by three students from the Department of Taiwanese Literature and the shooting process began with planning in August, 2009, and then actual filming from October, 2009, to October, 2010.

During the shooting process, the three students have discovered that hearing impaired is one of the most unrecognizable obstacles in all kinds of disabilities and the hearing impaired people are often easily misunderstood by others.

For example, when a hearing impaired person crosses the road, vehicle drivers often assume he or she can hear the honking sound so they do not slow down their speed or give precedence out of courtesy. In groups, hearing impaired people often affect the process of interpersonal communication because of hearing impairment.

From the documentary, the audiences not only witness the various problems that haring impaired students encounter in campus, they also enter their world and enjoy the way of sound.

Director Yan-Guang Yang of NCKU Student Counseling Division expressed, “We have many hearing impaired students in the campus and they are distributed in every department and institute, learning together with the regular students. Because the students cannot truly understand one another, the hearing impaired students still face pressure during class interaction.”

Director Yan-Guang Yang also mentioned, “Even with audiphones the condition of each hearing impaired student is different and it is impossible for the hearing impaired students to fully understand all the sounds surrounding them. They can only truly connect with the environment when they read lips and receive other assistance which can help them capture sounds.”

The Office for Disability Services is NCKU’s designated office for determining and providing a student’s eligibility for disability services, and its mission is to collaborate with and empower students with disabilities in order to coordinate support services and programs that have an equal opportunity to fully participate in all aspects of the educational setting.
